So I bought a truck and was very wary of the auto trans, but the dealer talked it up. I can't stand it and I'm willing to put the money into changing it. Most Pete shops won't even talk to me on the subject, couple said $20,000 in labor. Relinquishing the truck not an option, so I am looking for some comprehensive advice on how to go about changing it out myself. I don't have a clutch so I must install that as well, I know the drive shaft must be shortened and a cross member put in. Anyone able to give me the low down, mostly step by step on how to go about this?

Lol I would... But I've already put $20,000 into making this thing stay on the road. Definitely a lemon, but I'm getting the bugs worked out. Can't see handing the place all the new stuff and walking away with another used truck that'll likely be in the same condition mechanically that this one was.

If its allready got the clutch pedal, buy shifter at junk yard if not buy pedal, unbolt top ele. shift motors,trans ecm, and bolt shifter in same holes, eng. ecm must have A/T turned off.

It depends what kind of Autoshift Transmission you have. If it is a Eaton Fuller 10 Speed it can be converted to a Manual by installing the proper Top Plate and Manual Shifter and Re-Wiring the TCU, but it needs to be done by someone who knows how to convert them properly or they can destroy the transmission.

It's an eaton but an ultrashift plus with no clutch.

It does have a clutch in it ! No clutch pedal . And twenty grand , just buy a new transmission . Start over , that leaves 12k to install ? Let's not discount someone will want to buy your old transmission . Save a boatload of cash , pick up everything you need at a junk yard. Shift tower, clutch pedal + linkage , trans should leave 15 for labor ? Just don't see the price of an overhaul for what you want! Pete dealer may well told you 20k because he did not want to mess with it!

I fully intend to buy a new trans, I want a 13 not a 10. However the problem is the Pete dealers saying that nothing is the same and everything has to be changed. Some dealers (like the one in pocono) say that it can't be done. It simply seems to me that people are making a mountain out of a mole hill just because of their lack of experience or understanding. I'm calling eaton in the morning to see what they have to say on the subject. Somewhere something has to give. These auto shifts are not only junk but they're very unsafe. You can't downshift in emergency situations, in traffic jams it rolls OOG until it decides to slam into much too low of a gear causing serious unexpected slowing, going down a grade it goes OOG if you go down past 6th gear. -
Case length should be the same . Back box for the 13 speed will be little longer, will need to shorten the drive shaft. Not a big deal. All the auto stuff bolted on to a regular transmission . Let us know what eaton says !
