Wow! There are so many things to take apart!
First, your buddy has a BW turbo, not PP. They make it seem that it is their turbo in advertising, but after paying $200.00 more than I could have elsewhere, I bought it, and received a BW turbo instead os a PP like I thought I was getting.
If you think there is no improving over the OEMs, I have 3 things that would lead anyone to question that loyalty. 1) Caterpiller ACERT engines. 2) Navistar MaxxForce engines, and 3) after market performance parts for gas engines. Which would you rather have on your small block, a factory carburetor or a Holley? Factory shifter or Hurst? Borg Warner or Muncie trans? The fact is that many companies specialize in certain types of products that are better than the factory. My understanding is on the DDEC 3, one of the weak spots WAS the turbo.
Why does DDEC 4 have a waste gate

Well, anyone who has hauled a lot of automotive production parts knows, vehicles get what meets generic requirements, at the lowest cost to the OEM, made by the lowest bidder. They are not going to play around with specialty stuff. The end user can customize to match what works best for them.
At least for something like the Series 60, one can really bring it alive without having to take out a second mortgage.Oldironfan, Terry270, Bean Jr. and 1 other person Thank this. -

My question is how much boost pressure does this non waste gate turbo produce? Also what all does the boost sensor do besides sense the need does it also cap the amount? Most importantly how much boost can you give it safely?
-
A wastegate has nothing to do with the turbo itself. you can put a block off plate on and make it a non wastegated turbo.
A wastegate will keep the turbo in it's efficiency range. It will also limit boost but it can be adjusted.
The vgt type turbo is computer controlled so technically wastegated.Rideandrepair Thanks this. -
I have an 01 6nz cat. It will produce close to 50 psi if I let it, but I dont. I keep it between 35-40 max with my foot. Never have a problem with EGTs as long as you keep it at 1500 rpms or higher

For comparison the acert cat 15 engine build up to 60psi boost but it's hot and makes very little power per psi. It makes me laugh.

You do realize a 6nz IS a c15 right?
-
A 6nz is not really the same as a Acert c15. You do know that right? Many parts difference using the same block is all.

First time I drove a 550 BXS acert with an 18 speed I was highly disappointed. The first decent hill with 67k gross I had to drop a gear. I was thinking seriously? Talked the owner into the two sensor mods to eliminate turbo lag and fuel temp to keep the timing advanced. It helped some, but it’s no 6NZ.
