Getting a new radio soon and was wondering why a trucker would pay more for a ssb radio.
No one uses it in the OTR trucking world because everyone is on AM 19.
Maybe I'm failing to see the value in it...
If more drivers used it, I could see it being a good thing since it does have a little more power but I don't see the standard channel 19 changing anytime soon.
Why pay more for SSB?

I have a uniden 980ssb.
Got it on eBay $95. Shipped, have no idea how to even use the side band, bought it because the price was right -
Sideband can allow you to talk a bit further. It gives you 80 more options to carry on a conversation without modifications to the radio. to use it just choose upper or lower sideband. When you hear someone adjust your clairifier until they are at their clearest. I believe 38lsb is the main calling channel but others will correct me if I'm wrong.

darthanubis and Cottonmouth85 Thank this. -
I've never used SSB much in a mobile. Both the radios I use in the truck, Connex 3300HP and Cobra 25 modified, don't have SSB.

One of the bonuses would be the regulated power supply. Another bonus would be talking all over the world to people in different countries.
darthanubis Thanks this. -
I do use SSB when propagation allowed it.
I do speak english/french/spanish so there is always something going on for me.
I use a president lincoln 2 slightly modified "tx/rx" no LINEAR and a predator antenna, so far i had multiples QSO with France, Belgium, Switzerland, Italia, Germany, Jamaica, Mexico, Argentina, Venezuela all of U.S.A and Canada.
I am no ham because i have zero interest in the electronic portion of the radio i am all about having contacts all around the world.darthanubis, rabbiporkchop and Cottonmouth85 Thank this. -
I sure miss my big radio.... haven't got around to putting it in my truck so it's sitting on the shelf collecting dust.

Heard Great Britian on 38 lsb today in NC. He was generating a pile up of guys trying to make contact. Regarding Ougigoug comments I'm not into working on the internals of the radios either. Having the amateur license gives you a greater variety of bands on which to make contacts. If one band is closed usually there is another open. I like chatting as opposed to contesting myself. Unlicensed CB and the licensed Amateur are all part of the radio hobby it's just a matter of what suits you best. There are good and bad operators on all bands,
rabbiporkchop, darthanubis, mike5511 and 2 others Thank this.
