According to data released this week by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the trucking industry isn’t just doing well, it’s downright booming. The For-hire trucking industry added 45,300 jobs between April of 2012 and April of 2013.
The trucking industry currently employs about 1.368 million workers.
The number was topped off by a huge burst in April of 11,700 jobs. That’s just over 7% of the total national gain of 165,000 jobs in April.
April’s report is in stark contrast to the announcement in March that trucking had lost 6,300 jobs. National unemployment has dropped to 7.5 percent.

I imagine “For Hire” has done so much hiring because of the enormous turover rare, so many drivers quitting in anguish.
the incompetence I have experinced so far working for a major carrier has blown my mind.

You got that right e weed.I think companies delibrately make hell for the drivers/students to they do quit so other unsuspecting victims get hired for the subsidy money companies receive, compliments of the forced tax payer.Considering the CSA and everytning else gainst the industry as well as the drivers,I don’t kno how they can say trucking is booming. That has to be a miss print.Anybody who drives knows that is false information.Or shall I say does’nt matter ho many job were added, drivers don’t stay at one company long enough to make a difference in this quilty till proven innocent profession or job, whatever you call trucking.

Work for a small company where they will treat you right and pay over 40 cents per miles. There are plenty of companies in Chicago

Lets see 43000 jobs added. Humm 45% to Mexican companies, and 45% to port and can haulers, and 10% to American companies. Sounds pretty fair to me, what do you think??

And 80% quit within the first 90 days

yep. I was a company driver and I am only making about $450 each week (take home). I mean the driver condition has gone from bad to worst. Try to establish yourself and own a used truck to do O/O for better money or you might well quit and do something else. This is a different living world in trucking. I have done it for 3 years and I used to drive all over the country including canada.

Are there any small carriers hiring student graduates? It arena that most require at least a year of experience.

Hello, my boyfriend is just finishing up his CDL training at our community college. He has been in contact with different companies such as Schneider, Transport National, Maverick. in order to save up, he is considering doing over the road, but wants decent home time. I have tried reading reviews and all the companies seem to have at least some very bad reviews. We are in Southeast Wisconsin, can someone please let us know honest opinions of which companies truly are family friendly???

I’ve been driving since ’08. It was truly the worst job / experience of my life for the full first year. In that first year I developed my skills from nill to near acceptable. I had lots of time to do this because there really was NO freight. I saw my family about once every six weeks, even though I was told I would be home every two weeks. It dam nearly broke me, but I was to stupid to give up. Now after being a driver for over 5 years I work for a company that gets me home at least every weekend and pays me 41 cpm plus lots of extras, and I can say I like my job most days. I’m still on loose leaf logs and will be till I’m a trucker no more. The glory days of this industry are over, and the little joy left to be had quickly being regulated out of it. If you really want to sign up for CDL school understand that it’ll be a good long time before you have a decent job with decent pay, but it’ll cost you a decent life, and the prospects for it getting any better are slum ti none.

i drive for the same medium size company for approximatly 15 years . I wouldn’t change jobs on a bet. i found out if a person does his job without alot of bitching, things turn out great 99 percent of the time. i really enjoy the owners of my company. we take care of each other. it makes for a good family. enough……just do your job
