hey guys, i was talking to the guy i work for yesterday about a few trucks i looked at last weekend. 1 was a 95 volvo with a 475dd gets around 6mpg, 1 was a western star jacked up over 600hp and got around 4mpg. both of these have 24.5`s on them. the guy i work with said that people getting 6mpg or better were running smaller tires, how much difference does it make? can a guy gain a couple mpg`s by swapping tires? i like the ws but i don`t like 4mpg.

you will gain running 22.5's but i dont think 2mpg--stars are nice --but not very aerodynamic--mpg also depends a lot on the driver--as per speed/shifting/idle time and rear end ratio as well

thanks canuck, i was just sitting around trying to figure how to save a buck. i`ve looked at a bunch of trucks lately and these 2 are the best deals so far.

I would go with the star. run the smaller tires and turn it down to about 500hp. If it is an 03 or newer I would steer clear of it though. And the 05 volvo well its a volvo. They got issues. But hey what truck doesn't?

i was kinda thinking that too. they were both made in the 90`s. plan on paying cash and don`t want all the electrnics. i can fix just about anything that`s not electrical myself.

Yeah I am not happy about running the electronics but I have no choice. I wanted a newer truck to replace the one I lost last fall. My 1996 FLD 120. I miss that truck. It looked about like this one but mine was "black cherry" or as I called it dark dark red.
It wasn't really mine but might as well been. I drove it for an o/o and was able to do whatever I wanted with the truck and drive where ever I wanted. He owned 7 trucks and just sat at home finding us loads and taking care of all the paperwork. It was a good deal. Just bought my truck back in October. 06 Century. Can't wait till I pay it off and save the cash to buy something I really want rather then what I bought cause I found a great deal. -
i imagine the star has a cat more than likely--i think you will get better mileage with a detroit--but that is just me and what i am used to
but i would definately check the diff ratio---unless you are hauling heavy--you dont want more than a 3.70 -- i am not sure of the weight difference between the trucks--but that should be a consideration as well -
i`m pretty sure the star weighs more. i`m calling the guy tonight to find out more. as for the gears i can get a set of 370`s from the guy i work for and he said i could just have them. he said they only had about 1,000 miles on them. idk, i don`t need it tomorrow so i have time to figure it out, plus i`m still looking. i also need to figure out if i`m going back in the woods to haul trees or haul bags of potting soil from a place down the road.

I like the ser 60 det. as far as the tires. I had low pro 22.5 on mine & went to standard 22.5 because of the slightly taller tire the rpm's of the engine are lower due to the taller tire, while maintaining same speed as with the smaller tires. some say taller tires have more rolling resistance. to be honest I really dont know if my switching to taller rubber helped my m.p.g. I did it to get my top end up from 68 m.p.h. to 72 m.p.h. now this is only theory, but at 72 my truck is at 1850 rpm .same rpm it was with the smaller tire at 68 mph. 1850 is top end for my det.
