I have a friend who is looking at JB Hunt to lease on as owner operator. What should he expect? any insight will be helpful. Here is some of the stuff they are telling him he can choose from.
Independent Contractor Compensation Plans
J.B. Hunt offers a choice of three compensation plans.
Performance Percentage Plan
65% of the gross load revenue paid on all loaded miles
100% pass-through of shipper's fuel surcharge
Base plates/permits, Qualcomm, maintenance, fuel and required escrow deducted weekly
Requires 86% availability for dispatch and 100% load acceptance (No NYC or Canada)
Percentage Plan
62% of the gross load revenue, paid on all loaded miles
100% pass-through of shipper's fuel surcharge
Base plates/permits, Qualcomm, maintenance, fuel and required escrow deducted weekly
Ability to choose the loads that work best for you
Traditional Mileage Plan
90 CPM, paid on loaded miles
Empty miles paid at reduced rate
Flexible fuel surcharge, paid on loaded and empty miles
No forced dispatch
Plates, permits, tolls, scales and lumpers paid by J.B. Hunt Transport
Can you make money with JB. Hunt O/O

wow I just found all the write ups on JB Hunt I will TELL HIM STAY AWAY! YIKES!!!
123456 Thanks this. -
What seems best if he does not have a trailer is to get his own authority and run the power only program. But I would do that for as long as it would take to save for a trailer and then run on his own.
While not a fan of JBH you need to look at the dating of the threads. They did not do well by anyone during the downturn. Like many of the other companies. Many that I know that have been O/O and company drivers for decades said that it is not the same company since the old man passed.1989 Pete Thanks this. -
65% or 62%??? 90 cpm? Who the hell would ever think they can make money with deals like that...
-
90 cpm loaded? Wow! there are plenty of companies out there that will pay that or near to it unloaded!
That's the worst I've heard. -

Yeah $0.90 sounds terrible but you gotta add that fuel surcharge. We keep getting calls from JBH offering their Power Only Program. I keep telling them no but they are relentless. It's always someone new every week... anyway I digress.
They say their rate is $1.25/mi.... I laugh at this. However the one who called today told me that $1.25 doesn't include the FSC. Right now it's at $0.42. So you're looking at $1.66/mi.... I can see how that could be tempting to some. -
You made the mistake I did - you answered their call once. My new BFF at JBH has a number that resembles some that I routinely get calls from and stupid me I picked up. He does a desperation check on me at least once a week now, plus I get his e-mail updates on the latest offer. I will admit the calls are getting shorter. Today's only lasted about a minute, but I felt loved.

They must have called me 10 times in the last 6 months, different guy each time, must be desperate for trucks I guess.
-
I'm on the rotation but calls have dropped off. Told him the rates that I have been getting and I guess he figured out he did not have much to offer me. They are targeting the drivers that are getting bottom feeder rates. If you are getting $1.25 then $1.62 sounds like the mother load.
