Are you o/o hauling water in PA for the marcellus shale gas companies? I'm looking for some solid industry contacts involved in this supposedly lucrative gig. I hear all sorts of rumors swirling about $80 hr. for o/o hauling water in and waste water out w/ hazmat on the out. Can ANYONE substantiate any of this? I have an uncle down in VA who wants to put some trucks up that way but asked me to get some real info. Obviously besides driving the 45 minutes up there towards Tunkhannock I thought I'd check with Truckersreport guys first. Board searches yeild 5 results with mostly questions and few answers. Help me out fellas? Thanks In Advance.

$80 an hour is cheap in the oil field. They are paying around $110 here in Oklahoma.
SHC Thanks this. -
Your uncle or you should do some research into what it does to the trucks in the oil fields. I haven't personally even driven yet but I've been reading all the threads I can on oilfield gigs. Most all people have mentioned that once a rig goes into the fields it never goes OTR again. This should be considered before jumping into field hauling I believe. The number I see thrown around most of the time is $100/hr for O/O hauling in the fields. Also what most are saying is go to where the work is and ask there seems that most hire face to face not over the phone. Not sure if its the same for O/O since its more of a business contract then employment contract.
Thinking more about it I would suggest maybe committing one truck to it and see how it goes if its all he expects or not. I don't think I'd send a fleet into the fields without knowing first if its a mistake as it will take a serious toll on the tractors that even spend a little time there. Also the truck he sends he should send someone he trusts or go himself. I think your setting yourself up for problems committing everything to the fields without understanding the work.Last edited: Jul 20, 2011

You also need to check and see how often they pay. Running under your own authority hauling in the oil fields around here is a 30 to 60 day pay. The oil companies have the work and pay decent but they like to keep the money in the bank longer. That is one reason I haven't jumped on it plus they want me to sign a document saying if I get hurt or my equipment gets damaged by them or any of there customers I can not hold them liable.
Also depending on the job you need to look at your expenses. In the oilfield it is rough on oilfield spec'd equipment so a regular OTR truck running on dirt and gravel roads most of the time your going to have a lot of stuff break. If your making a $100 an hour I bet half will go to fuel. Tires are not going to last as long you may get 70k out of a set of drives if your lucky.
If I wasn't married I would be taking off for the oil fields but not with my own truck. My nephew is moving drilling rigs in North Dakota and he started out making $7,000 a month in wages. After expenses owning a truck and trailer I can't even get close to that. lolBigJohn54 Thanks this. -

This is natural gas Fracing it takes alot of water. Not exactly the same as oil field work. Peoplw w tankers are running 24/7 up here hauling water. Fresh in and mildy contaminated out. a lot of sitting, why the hrly rate is in effect.

That's not quite accurate.
Most of the sand haulers contract with another company who contracts with the oil company. At least that's the way it works up in the Bakken.
A good friend of mine went up there 8 months ago. He's contracted to a sand hauling company, they're contracted to a sand company that has a contract with the oil company. The 45-60 days is for all the billing to go up and down the chain. Once the checks start, they're consistent. Every two weeks in his case.

Ummmmmm, no. My friend's fuel expenses are half what they were when he was OTR. His net check, after fuel deductions (the sand hauling company has a bulk fuel terminal he has access to) is rarely less than $12,000 for two week's work. I can guarantee you he isn't grossing over $24,000 for those two weeks. You don't burn that much fuel going 10 MPH over an oil well access road.
Rates in the Bakken are a little more, it would seem, than the southern states or Pa. Of course, you have the word "North" in front of Dakota, which scares a lot of people away right from the start. My friend gets $135/hr running and $100 for all other activities (loading, unloading, waiting). That's using their trailer. He has his own on order, but it won't be in until next spring. -
Im looking to head out to ND for work and wanted to know if you could tell me who your friend is leased to?

can any one give me a few contacts for hauling water in Pa as an o/o also what else are they hauling besides water and sand????

I've hauled some of the foam they use to insulate the pipelines in and out of the wells. The truck traffic us insane. I talked t the guy tuning the pipeline company and he said they were just beginning phase two and thousands of wells were going on.
plymouth Thanks this.
