Smart brokers know not to look at number but what the DOT has on website. You have have the first MC # issued and if they let you keep it they will show a new active date. I believe the term they use is Material Change of Ownership. But what they are looking at is to make sure you are not creating a false safety rating.

What is the charge for MC#?
-
There is a one time filing fee of $300 for your authority.aiwiron Thanks this. -
I did not know you could buy someone else's number. I thought that number stayed assigned to you. I thought all new carriers were "assigned" a new number. I didn't know you could choose your own number.
I have checked on my number a few times on line & its still registered/assigned to me although we have been out of business since 2007. I do know that I can re-activate my status. So, does anyone know for certain that you can request a certain number even though it was someone else's? How long does a number have to be inactive before it can be taken?
I am just surprised that an existing number, although in-active, can be requested or taken. -

I don't think that you can just take a number that has been assigned to someone else, even if it has been inactive for a while. You can purchase a number from the owner. There will be a transfer charge from the fmcsa. You can call the feds and ask to be sure.aiwiron Thanks this. -
Why do you want to buy an old MC number? -
-
Bacause it will be easier to work.

Read the regulations. You can buy it but won't be able to use it. Anybody that has looked at doing this ever run a new MC? Very little issue. Biggest issue with being new isn't about the MC age but all about the lack of experience with the broker that will allow you to get better rates. New or old MC, you still have to put in your time.
Anyone looking at doing this needs to understand in order to get what you want from this (aged MC/Money) all parties will need to commit fraud. Very specific questions are asked by the FMCSA that you will have lie about and then sign.
