Yes you can find work to get you home every night and it doesnt have to be container work ... I run flatbed and when you get yourself together I know a company right in your area that would work out

Working LTL is ok... the pay is good and benefits are free, but my work ethic compared to the unions and other coworkers is killing me. I really cannot bear being the only one busting my rump and seeing nothing out of it.

Its the biggest reason I would like to go out on my own, bust butt and hopefully, make it good

Edit: I dont want to bash unions either.....i guess im 50/50 on it...but i think they dont benift the hardest and dedicated of the work force as much...thats all

Container Port Group might be a good fit for you living in Indianapolis. They run up to Chicago and back usually once a day. I have a friend leased there and he likes it, but u will be on the bottom of the list. He said most the new guys were only working 1-2 days a week right now. He runs everyday but has been with them (it was a different company before CPG) for about 9 years now. He's home everyday

There's good money in intermodal IF you are with the right company. I leased to SNI back in 2004 and did their intermodal in Chicago. I worked Mon-Thurs 8p-5a and cleared $700 a night doing yard swaps and only used about $100 in fuel. Ahhh, those were the good ol' days

If im not mistaken you are leased to landstar right? Me too but im on the van side<got my own van>. I use to run SNI intermodal also out of charlotte/greensboro NC. Made good $ before SNI started not to ship stuff on the train in a regular orange box<greensboro rail> Then we started shipping stuff on SNLU's, but they didnt want any of the white SNLU's anymore, so all in all they cut out the gboro yard and I just left....

Your other options are fuel hauling or construction work. They will get you home most every night . Money depends on the company you can hook up with. It's not what it was I'll say that.......

    Just a thought......

Spot off the boards locally is not bad depending on where you're at. You always want to pick off same day pick and drop stuff on short miles. You can learn your local area really well and network with who has it. Then mix it up with occasional trips out somewhere but the rate needs to be close to round trip on those and you need an idea of what's on the way back in. I've been doing local work for about 6 months now home every other if not every night. Got connected with some solid round trip stuff now that's working really good for the time being.

I started when all we had were OPSU containers and they were from the UP yard. Then they bought them all from UP and switched them to the first SNLU cans (white before the orange ones came out) In the Chicago market, we ran strong and it's still the largest one for SNI. But they started bringing in company drivers and slowly phased out all the O/O trucks on the rail division. I left in 2008 after 5 years of being leased there.
