so, would it come back to bite you for having both. sometime down the road????

since the contract would only require one insurance. and the common requires both. doesn't seem like it be worth the bother of having contract.

Both types of authority now only required auto liability. Cargo is no longer required for motor carrier authority. I believe that it may still be required for household goods, but not for any other type of authority. However, in order to book loads, you will usually need to carry a minimum of $100,000 cargo in addition to $1 million liability.

That’s odd because the FMCSA site’s FAQ just a week or so ago had a question for the cost of authorities that used Common and Contract carrier authority in it for an example that said it would be $600 for both. I looked it up for another thread and even linked to it but when I went to recheck it after reading your post the example is no longer there. The link still goes to the same question (#4) but the question has been changed to “Must freight forwarders and brokers register with FMCSA?”

It must be a fairly resent change although I cannot find anywhere in the FAQ where it says you can get both for $300; it still implies that they are $300 each if you search the “Operating Authority FAQ”.

I was questioning the validity of an advertisement that a user posted for a service that said it could get both authorities for $425. I guess they were not over advertising after all.

Who would have though the government would make anything cheaper? Good news :biggrin_25520:
