I'm currently a company driver but am 90% certain I'll be giving 2 week notice in 2 weeks. I haven't found any companies I'd want to lease to and I've read that it takes 4-6 weeks to get your numbers. Aside from the wasted filing fees, would there be any other drawbacks if I applied for DOT & MC #'s but decided to stay a company driver?

Also, to be listed as a hazmat carrier it is just a separate form (& more insurance)? Or are there additional (federal) permits?

Not sure how a dormant dot/mc would either hurt or benefit you ... as for the hazmat deal, your insurance will be higher, I found it would only be worth it if you had plenty of steady business running it ... was not worth the extra for my situation.

Own your own truck yet? Probably better to have the truck before you go get your numbers ...

Thinking about it a bit more, it wouldn't make sense for you to get them until you are ready to roll on your own anyway. The time it takes for you to get them is not very long at all, however actually going to 'active' is what the time delay is. You have to start your insurance policy, then wait for your insurance company to notify the DOT/FMCSA that you are indeed insured. So you could go get them, but when the time comes, you would still have to wait for the insurance to talk to DOT/FMCSA ... which I think takes 3 weeks or so.

depending on how fast he wanted to roll.

3 weeks to get your numbers + 3 weeks on insurance. whatever the timeframe may be.

if he got his numbers, then he'd only have to wait for insurance. a decision he'll have to make

Can you get the liability insurance without a truck & trailer yet? Assuming I get a 94-95 tractor I wouldn't be wanting additional coverage anyway.

Recommendations for insurance companies? Ooida? Progressive? State farm apparently doesn't do class 8 interstate stuff...

I have a dormant (for now) USDOT number. Doesn't hurt anything, doesn't do anything either. Just update your info as required and it'll stick around. MC number doesn't really make sense to get unless you're ready to pull the trigger on insurance, IMO. I'm waiting for mine until my equipment is paid for, decided not to jump out on my own while carrying a truck note.
