They are all just nuts and bolts, some a little more expensive than others. I would look for something in the pre 04 age range and look it over well. Try to find something that's been owned by the same guy for a while and took care of it. Seriously consider a sleeper even if it is a small flattop. I always preferred them anyways.

Wondering if it might be a good option to get a daycab version of something with a removable sleeper. Thinking of something like a 379 with enough wheelbase to fit a sleeper, then I could always retrofit a used Unibilt for what I think wouldn't be all that much money, if I ever needed to start taking it farther from home.
No idea how good of an idea it would be in the real world, but it seems that having more options would always be better. -

Freight shaker is the best.....you break down you can find a freightliner n e where.....petes are over priced and small on the inside. ...unless u get the 387 or 587....kw are small and over priced unless u get the studio sleeper....volvo are nice but they burn a ton of fuel....

An "investment", I would assume you aren't considering those throw-away fleet trucks.
That pretty much leaves a conventional Pete or KW.
