Hello, please help me find the answer. Can I make a fuel card for my company if I do not own a truck, and I rent a truck from another company? And then I can get a fuel card? Thank you.

I think most fuel card companies, such as comdata, EFS, TCHeck, etc., will require you to have authority. However, you should check with them to be sure. Most will require good credit or you may be able to prepay with a deposit from your bank account. TAB bank has a new program for small businesses where they issue you a mastercard debit or credit card and you can get fuel rebates of 1.75% of your fuel purchase. If you want deep discounts you will usually need to use the fuel card issued through the carrier to whom you are leased. I have a friend who is leased to Universal Am Can. He told me that he saved $0.67/gallon using their fuel card yesterday. He doesn't always receive that much of a discount, since it will vary from one fuel stop to another. Most of the larger carriers offer fuel discounts when you use their fuel card.

Just google diesel fuel programs. There are several out there from small businesses to fleets. It's no different than applying for a business credit card. Some require authority, some don't. All they care about is you pay the bill. Even the truck stop chains have small business fuel cards. Most you can control online who is authorized and how much fuel they can buy. You should be able to find a .03-.10 cent discount over pump prices.

I don't know any truck stop chain that offers their own fuel card. Flying J used to have a fuel card before Pilot bought them out, but they owned their own bank. They no longer own that bank. These fuel card companies don't care whether you own the truck or rent it. Many carriers lease their truck rather than own them. It can be a tax advantage for them, in some cases. Some fuel card issuers require a business to be active for a couple of years before offering credit. If you plan on leasing to a carrier you will be usually receive higher discounts using their card. If you are a single truck operation, you would probably be as well off using something like the TAB card. If you plan on attending the Dallas Truck Show, most of the major fuel card companies should have a booth and you can speak with them directly. I think the show is August 21-23? One thing to keep in mind with fuel cards is that most of them charge a fee to use them. There is NO charge to use the TAB card.

We do not own trucks. We lease one truck from Ryder for customers within 300 miles or so, although we ship 95% of our product by other companies. We use Comdata.

So, in short, we dont own a truck but we have a Comdata Card for our company fuel purchases. So, yes you can.

Golga, hopefully I can clear up your question. The answer to your question, do you have to have your own authority to get a fuel card is no. Many owner operators are leased on to other companies and drive under the companies authority, but control their own fuel card. It is not required by fuel card companies to have authority in any instance.

After you decide on a fuel card company, whether its T-Chek, EFS, TCH. Comdata or Fleet One, you need to contact a discount provider that uses the buying power of every truck on their program to negotiate discounts on fuel. Send me a message if you want to talk about your particular situation more and I can point you in the right direction to start saving up to $.30/gal, even for 1 truck companies.
