I wanting to get a feedback from you guys and gals about an idea I have.

I have a buddy that just purchased a new truck (nearly the same time this year when I got my first truck) and he is holding on to his 07 century just in case his new fl cascadia evolution broke down (smart right?Cuz I know it will). And i have been thinking of doing this as well as I have an 09 prostar with c13.... my idea was to grab a truck for like 7-15 grand and keep that around for when my truck goes down... I know I know.... I shouldn't have grabbed an 09 prostar I should have stayed with a pre egr cheap truck, but I had to learn somehow and i chose the hard way. My thought is if the cheap truck runs a few weeks, it pays for its self and if it breaks after that.. Oh well, part it out or scrap it.

But what do you think about having a cheap truck as a backup?

As long as you don't mind paying for the plates, 2290, IFTA and advalorum tax. Also at least liability insurance would have to be kept to keep tags current. I think you can add and drop it for cargo insurance at will. Also don't forget all the maintenance records in case of audit. I could see this being feasible if you had several trucks but don't know if it would be worth it for one unless yours stays broken down constantly in which I would sell the one breaking down all of the time.
If you have something dedicated that the load has to move you could consider a rental like Ryder. I have never done this but heard of it being done.
Otherwise I would just use the time for getting all of your honey do's done or just go fishing.

Also need to keep the SAFETY inspections up to date as well as keeping it in touch the key and it fires up ready to hit the road condition. And if your leased to anyone you need to let them know about having 2 trucks and make sure the 2nd truck ( REPLACEMENT ) is acceptable to them.

take and put the money in the bank and use it to repair or replace ,why spend money on equipment that is going to sit most of the time and go down in value

Sell the '09 Prostar and use the proceeds to buy two identical trucks.

Rank has a smart idea. Two identical trucks, one is the truck that gets used and the other is for parts. If it makes sense budget wise then do it. But before anything calculate the cost for a year or two and decide is it better to take all that money and put it in the bank for repairs or a buy a spare truck.
Another option is to calculate the estimate for the other truck, take that money and put it in a separate back account, sell the prostar in a year and buy a better truck or new/newer one.

To address your question. It doesn't cost much at all to have a spare sit at home, just in case. You can add a truck to your IRP at any time. Just fax or email the paperwork . Maintenance records everyone keeps for taxes. I have done this for years. My spare truck I used off road weekly, so I did use it to make sure everything was working.
I only "needed" to use it a couple times in 5 years. I was lucky my main truck broke close to home. If I was 1000 miles away it would not have been worth getting home to get truck and drive back and forth a couple times.

Seriously guys, this is b.a. I wasnt expecting much of a convo.... or ideas on it.... I was expecting the usual flaming. And yes honestly I've looked at how much it should cost just to leave the spare truck sitting, and the number wasn't worrying as if the main truck goes down for one week it covers all the costs and keeps my dedicated route. And my fiance agrees with the go home and take care of the honey do list. But honestly there are things some of you mentioned that I've completely overlooked or didn't consciously think about during the brainstorming (probably a beer goggle like thing).
I think I'll be pondering a lot more on this all before I pull the trigger either way, as I have plans to add another truck and driver in a year. I might either wait, or grab a pre egr truck soon and use the time to get it right (and run from time to time if needed or just to benchmark what the truck can do). Or he'll even use the idea of selling the prostar and grabbing 2 trucks.

But to all of you thank you for your time, ideas, and concerns.
