Let me tell you a little story about an Owner/Op of ours. Worked with us for several years and then one day, out of nowhere, or for reasons he would not share with us, he broke off all communication with the company. He just said in his own mind...YOU ARE DEAD TO ME. So he wouldn't send in any of his documentation on loads he was due money on. He probably did some piecemeal mathematical calculation that he was either flat with us or he may owe us a grand or so. And his thinking was....you want it, you can come and get-it. So we scramble around to mitigate his unorthodox withdrawal from the company and when all the dust settles, we owe him around $2300. The reason? He forgot that he had made a big-fat deposit with us when he first started working, we hold that for contingencies. So, all calls unanswered, bad feelings about not getting our load documentation, we let the money sit there in his dead account for a couple of years. We then moved it into an abandoned property account to be surrendered to the State in seven years. And his name was relatively common, so he can do the abandoned property search and it's not going to help. That trucker sure sent us an expensive message. But the States are hurting for money, so it's a good-thing.

"There is no room for emotion in business." Widely attributed to Donald Trump, but postulated long before he was born.

As we know, driving is so TAXING on the body and mind that fighting off the emotional aspects of being an O/O is probably difficult. In my opinion, he had a catharsis about the loads we were feeding him or more likely all the deadhead miles we were shoving down his throat and he lost-it. Could happen to anyone.

Presumably you knew he was still above ground? He could have dropped dead with nobody around to care enough to let you know.

I think I just passed him on the road, I believe he was sitting at the TA waiting for a fuel advance. Must be patient! HAHA :biggrin_2559:

This sounds very odd to me. Either he is dead, ill or in jail. I am curious as to whether you made any attempt to send the owner operator a certified letter or check the obituaries? If an owner operator has been with a company for several years and with a good relationship and then abruptly cuts off all communication, something must have happened that is out of their control that would have prevented him from contacting you. If he still had bills and paperwork on a load that he has not been paid, that would also not make sense. Most of us want to be paid as quickly as possible on our loads. I can't imagine anyone not sending in bills so they can be paid. Two years is a long time to go without being contacted. Most carriers will contact previous employers or carriers to whom an owner operator is leased. Has any carrier contacted you about this owner operator?
