CARB question on reefer

    So, I'm going to be purchasing my own trailer, running under my own authority. The truck I'm purchasing meets California CARB compliance, but with what's left financially, the reefer will not be. In the $10,000 range of trailers I'm looking at, it poses the question I have. If I am hauling dry van goods, say toilet paper, into California and hauling dry van out, does the reefer still have to be CARB compliant? Or does the freight supercede the rule allowing a noncompliance reefer to be run as a dry van in the Land of Fruits and Nuts?

    My understanding is if you have a reefer it must be "operational" & "compliant" but if it is not you must have the unit inspected & certified as OOS

    I'm not a lawyer BUT I'm pretty sure you either have to have a compliant engine OR the unit has to be disabled so it can not run. Not sure what your budget is but I bought an older (2007) trailer with a new motor and rebuilt compressor in it and it's CARB legal until 2019 for $28k. It wasn't $10k but it wasn't $55-60k like a new one either and came with warranty on the reefer engine and compressor.
