Have just over 3 million miles on cat. Do regular maintenance, change all wear items, as well as, mains and rod bearings. Make sure valves are always in adjustment and get rid of def system completely. If you keep the def system the motor will never make it to 2 million miles. That system is death for the motors, it's a cancer that won't quit until your motor is a boat anchor. I know it costs money to do away with the def system. But buying a new truck or buying a new motor is way more costly.

I may be wrong but isnt the def require on new trucks by federal law? Especially in California with their CARB crap?

The DEF and DPF are NOT what required by any law, that is what the manufactures are using to meet the emissions standards.

So its not even an emmisions LAW per se, but rather a standard that EPA, or whomever, WANTS all truck to meet?

The trucks have to meet the emissions standards set forth by the government. How the manufactures do it, is up to them.

Thanks for the clarification Oscar...wouldn't removing def/dpf as suggested then make the truck illegal to run? Assuming it'd no longer pass an emmisions inspection?

    Buhin Thanks this.

Yes,.. very illegal with big fines if you get caught. Thats with any vehicle in any state. I get away with it on my personal vehicles because I live in a state that has no inspections or emissions testing. Still doesnt make what I do legal.

And it was mentioned in another thread that shops who discover trucks that have been 'tampered' with are supposed to or will eventually hold the trucks until they are in compliance.

Not something I would want to contend with, because I'd probably end up in jail.

Yes, it would no longer meet the emissions standards (laws) for the year that it was manufactured in, and according to the letter of the law, it would be illegal to remove the emissions components and/or operate the truck that way.
