I am driver with 6 years OTR experience who has finally decided to start my own company and start hauling my own freights. I currently have OOIDA and my monthly premium jumped $50 if we want to renew. Im thinking of finding a better insurance company to insure my 1 truck as I try to do things on my own. I have been hearing that Northland is a good insurance company?

Does anyone agree? Or can anyone recommend some great insurance companies?

Any tips and advice will be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks, Dave

The best quotes I got were from the local yellow pages... Call call and call some more -- its worth the effort.

Northland has done me well for the last 3 years. But they are only as good as your local agent. Find one who specializes in trucks, and make sure he knows everything you plan to do.

Have had Great West and Northland in the past - never had a claim with Northland but it was great coverage. With Great West had a few minor claims, including one where they went to bat for me after a forklift driver drove out the side of a dry van. Keep in mind that a good agent will find a good company for you, this is one area where I get it, everyone wants cheap, just make sure it is good coverage. Not a whole lot of sense in looking cool in a new Pete or KW only to find out your physical damage coverage is crap, because bad things happen quick in this business. Northland is actually owned by Travelers.

If I recall, and I could be wrong on this, but I think GW and Northland both require being in business for two or three years before they will write coverage. AIG is typically a pretty good carrier. A smaller insurance company that you may want to check out is RLI, no exp with them but I have heard good things. After that you can look at Carolina Casualty and Canal.

Northland hands down. OOIDA is not accepted by a lot of brokers.

I'm doing that probably next year. Got a truck, need a trailer (new), a labtop to find loads, take turns with dad and I driving week by week. Only have 3 months experience with my cdl.

Watch out. Northland will not insure you without at least 1 year or more experience. Even if your dad insures the truck with lots of experience Northland will not let you drive it. The insurance company has to approve anyone who drives a truck
