I live in NH and a few years ago I almost got $100 a mile to haul a load. We were expecting a hurricane the next day which never came by the way. When we do get a hurricane the power goes out for a long time due to all the trees. This was a large meat market and he wanted to load up his storage refer unit and have it pulled 5 miles away to a much more secure area. He looked online for trucking companies in NH and found me in town. He thought $3.00 a mile would be good. I told him $500 and he flipped out. Thought I was a taxi service. Also told him I wanted cash up front. Went over in my car first.
I get there and the trailer is out of registration, inspection and the brakes are frozen. As far as he's concerned, it's my fault. Not sure what happened. I said I wasn't interested after that and him being mad at me.

Sometimes, it is best to walk away. I have gotten calls the last couple of weeks for a lot of short runs. I could have done some of them, but for the rate. By the time I took the deadhead miles into consideration most of the rates were not worth it. A lot of owner operators don't consider deadhead when looking at loads. A 300 mile run might pay $600. That is $2/mile. If you need to deadhead 200 miles to get the load, then the real rate you are running your truck is $1.20/mile. Deadhead miles are not free. It still costs the owner of the equipment money to move the truck. If the load paid $900, the shipper or broker would sell it as paying $3/mile. Using the same deadhead miles, the owner or the equipment would be making $1.80/mile. That may be acceptable to some whereas the $600 rate would not.

Neighbor was selling his beater pick up truck and listed it for $200 or best offer. Dumb Iraqi kid shows up and wants to drive it everyday for a 150 mile round trip. Neighbor tries to discourage him,,uses oil, needs brakes etc...kid pulls out $350 and says,,,well this is the best I can do,,,,,please sell me the truck...

Shooting yourself in the foot for sure turning that feature off. Anything that has them calling you instead of the other way around is exactly what you want. That's negotiating brokered loads rule # 1 on how to win in my book. The one that calls first is the loser with a weak hand.
