After seeing the pictures there isn't a doubt in my mind the jack wagon could have grabbed the front yolk without removing anything and rocked it back and forth and told which rear had trouble. It amazes me at the idiots that call themselves mechanics or technicians.
Well that could have gone a little smoother......

why does this happen? is this normal over time wear or something failed?
-
It wasn't for lack of maintenance. Oil was changed twice as often as required. Unit had just over 1,000,000 miles.
I noticed symptoms for about 1000 miles that I had tried to pin down but I was looking in the wrong place. I thought they were engine related because the vibration/ rattle came and went with the throttle. -
Usually the best techs are the ones in the independent shops that stay so busy you have to schedule time in their shop in advance.77fib77, Rooster903, "semi" retired and 2 others Thank this.
