After seeing the pictures there isn't a doubt in my mind the jack wagon could have grabbed the front yolk without removing anything and rocked it back and forth and told which rear had trouble. It amazes me at the idiots that call themselves mechanics or technicians.

I believe it started with the hardness coming off the bearings. You can see that the bearing is missing in the first picture.

It wasn't for lack of maintenance. Oil was changed twice as often as required. Unit had just over 1,000,000 miles.

I noticed symptoms for about 1000 miles that I had tried to pin down but I was looking in the wrong place. I thought they were engine related because the vibration/ rattle came and went with the throttle.

I was a Mac Tools Distributor for about 7 years & got to learn a lot about different shops. There are always exceptions but, from my experience, most of the techs in the dealerships are just parts changers guessing at what to try. Most people think the dealership is the best place because those guys are the experts with their brand. If they didn't have an 800 number to call for support many of them wouldn't have a clue as to diagnosing an issue.

Usually the best techs are the ones in the independent shops that stay so busy you have to schedule time in their shop in advance.
