I have a 2013 Western Star with a 560 DD15 that I bought new. It's just over two years old now and a little over 210,000 miles. I haven't had any issues with the engine or emissions. Just standard truck stuff. Had to get the wiper motor replaced the first spring, and the heater motor the following winter. The oil pan started to leak a few months ago, when it started to get bad I had it fixed under warranty. I change the oil every 650 hours and it never requires any additional oil in between.
I've only ever had one truck that was an on-going problem. Turns out the previous owner drove the crap out of it, and wasn't much into preventative maintenance, such as grease.
If you get a new truck and drive it like you stole it, it will become a problem child.
I'm finding that the DPF filters become problems in operations where they don't get hot enough to keep themselves cleaned out of soot. (City P & D, too much idling) So work it hard once in a while, say while climbing a large hill, (weekly), kind of like in the old days when we "blew the carbon out of her".

I appreciate the input. The monthly payment is $2600 for 57 months "I'd get 3 months off for signing with Landstar" That's $162,000 out the door with the down payment , for a $148k-$150k truck, the interest is calculated into the $2600 a month payment, no variable rates, no balloon payment at the end , you own the truck free and clear at the last payment, and from what I gather it's a way lease, though I'd be walking away from my $14k and and any other payments/money i put into it ....

OH ANOTHER THING, I forgot to mention .. I'm single no kids, no mortgage, no old lady no major bills, so when people say you have to manage between home life budget and the truck etc. I have NO HOME LIFE , so I guess that's the one thing I got going for me

I plan on pulling their trailers to start, until I can get my own trailer, that's another what 7-10% revenue to the truck , just gotta get going first to bank some $$$

WOW, that's a ~4% rate. I'd still recommend taking a couple months minimum to study the business, but I'd have a hard time turning down a 4% loan. Any chance they'll finance a glider instead?

my #'s aren't 100% on point @tm .. I still have alot red tape to get through before I can formulate a full financial workup but those are the general #'s to start.

I'm going based on what I've communicated with the sales guy and this is what it works out to + a $1000 off the down payment so the #'s are there ... Alot more to calculate in just a good starting foundation to work with ....

This is the #'s from their site >

    Workstation (Manual 13): $14,000 down, $2500/60 Months
    Workstation (I-Shift): $14,000 down, $2550/60 Months

Gotcha. It looks like they're calling it a $150,000 truck but you can really buy a comparable spec Cascadia EVO for $127,000: http://www.truckpaper.com/listingsdetail/detail.aspx?OHID=5759877

That brings the apr up to ~11% which no longer seems "too good to be true," but still isn't as usurious as I would have expected.

Another option is a Glider Kit truck. You can buy a 2015 truck that has everything brand new without and engine. Then the local people that sell glider kit truck take a new rebuilt pre emissions S60 Detroit and install it in the truck. You drive out with a new 2015 truck with a new 2001 engine. It just not legal in California. http://fitzgeraldgliderkits.com

I don't offer advice or guidance, I have leased to LS , Cardinal coal city , il and fikes. LS was far and away the best. I can tell you more than you want to know with the last two.

Ogre and double yellow have good things to say. If you have more debt than money, that's almost a surefire way to go broke. Even more broke. Actually, you don't have any money, since you owe more than you have. Straighten out your money, get out of debt, get your credit numbers up around 800, then do it with a better chance of success. All the other problems will still be waiting for you, don't let that bother you.
