Yes. You have 30 days to get it tagged.

Any motor vehicle needs to be registered to operate on any public highway in any state. 1. get a permit from the state you bought it in, or 2. play dumb, and run without, the worst you would have to buy a permit at POE in states you run thru, as in Tn. Also be aware not all states will honor a permit issued in another state.

I would cut thru the red tape by bobtailing a detour. Neither of the scales on your route are difficult to bypass in fact the Manchester one is actually out of your way if you choose the scenic route.

you will need to get a temporary registration, and in transit insurance.

Take a trip to the local DMV where your purchasing it and get a temp tag, youll already have all the necessary stuff if you have insurance on it. It will make the ride home a lot less stressful as it is required by law. Chances are nothing would happen but I wouldn't risk it without a registration. Did it many times with different vehicles in my younger days with nothing but a plate a I had laying around. Only ended up in handcuffs once.

Bean Jr. Thanks this. -
Manchester scale on the eastbound side is now closed for renovations. The new one on the westbound side looks like it will be up and running very soon.
