Because you need to show up in some of there offices and then they'll look at you. On the Internet you better have something that stands out to them since they prob get a billion resumes.

I got a few call backs, but I had started working here already. New drivers MAY have luck knocking on doors, but experienced drivers shouldn't hve problems finding work up here. If they do, there is something else wrong with them. IMHO

    Update:

Still hauling logs. Hauling out of the pit now as the bush is a little wet. Should firm up soon. My driving skills have improved quite a bit but I am a little concerned now with winter moving towards us. A new set of driving skills will be required and it'll be a new learning curve.

I think if I can get through this winter with my truck intact and myself intact, I'll be in a better position next year to look around at other work. For now i still consider myself lucky to be working as I'm a "new, out of driving school" driver.

My biggest obstacle so far has been the weird shifts and getting enough rest. You can't just pull over anywhere with a 70 tonne b train and have a nap. There are turnouts, but spaced about 80 km apart or so, so it's often a case of just trying to make it to the next turnout.

I'll update again as winter sets in.

So what was the final $$ factor, or are you 'volunteering' ?

No. I trained for a week at 75 bucks a day, and then got kicked into my own truck and haul at the same rate as everyone else. we get 33 % of the trucks earnings. It works out pretty good.

Rudester...may I ask what company you're driving for.

I'm very interested in going out west to drive, leaving the family back here in Ontario.

    Any comments would be appreciated.

It'd be a tough sell to get another brand new guy in here with winter about to set in. How much experience do you have and have you hauled heavy in the bush before? Are you familiar with radio on bush roads, CTI and navi-stream? Any winter driving experience? I know that they'd be looking for a driver or two pretty soon here.

I just read your post in another thread and have answered all the above questions by doing so. I would not recommend to learn to drive by hauling logs in the winter. It's been a pretty steep learning curve for me here and that was starting in the summer. I was an experiment here. Hire a brand new guy out of school and see if we can teach him. I was hand picked by the school for certain qualities and skills and sent out here. Not bragging or boasting about myself, just telling it like it is. I know they would not hire a brand new guy right now, that nobody knew anything about. The trainer up here has stated very clearly that as soon as the snow starts flying, he is driving, not training.

Out of curiosity how old are you and are you a motorcycle rider?

I'm 48 and starting a second career. While I've always wanted to ride, I've haven't done so yet. It's definitely on my bucket list. One of the things I plan on doing when I get out to Alberta. With my wife and kids staying in Ontario for the time being I figure I can get my license without anyone knowing. Better to ask forgiveness than permission.
