Hey, so i figure this is a good place to ask, is it possibleto get a CDL converted to a class 1 license? Also because I'm not an american or Canadian citizen would that complicate it? (I have a visa for Canada) cheers

CDL is a class 1. Commercial drivers licence . Cannot convert it, you would have to do our road test.

Yes, you can, if you reside in a state that borders a Canadian Province all you have to do is go in to licensing bureau and exchange license, works both ways.
It is an agreement that bordering states/provinces have, you may have to look real hard to find it, but it's there in the books/rules.
CDL/AZ/CLASS 1,,,, they are equal in value.
Some state or province may asking you to do a drive test, but you don't have to start all over again.

That is / was true MANY MANY Quebec, and NB drivers have done that with Maine, and vice/versa. I'm related to a few of the Mainers that have done that.

As far as I know, NO Canadian province has a reciprocal agreement to convert ANY commercial driver's license. Alberta explicitly states it on their website. I took a brief look at Ontario and Quebec and could only find generic information targeted at passenger car license holders. I did find this information:
So, you can exchange your license for a passenger vehicle license (Class 5 in Alberta), but you will have to test out for a Class 1.

I'd run with that - just for sheets and giggles, I tried to Google info related to cross border licenses swapping coast to coast and can no longer find ANY info. Doesn't surprise me. As similar as our north and south regulations may be, there is still the almighty gov't tax grabs that have to be considered by both countries.

Unless something has happened in the last couple of years, I still say you can.
When I went in to exchange mine from Minnesota to Ontario, the clerk said no, we discussed it for about 15 min. then I said to give me a regular G license and I will check this out later.
Where I was working at the time, our shop was an authorized Ontario inspection station so we where inspected on a regular schedule, the next time the MTO inspector came for a visit, my shop foreman and I asked him and he said that it is a program for that, but it is buried deep in the regs and he understood that the clerk would not know, but he said she should have known.
The Inspector said that he would help me in any way needed to get it taken care of.
At the time I let it go, which I should not have done, but I figured that at my age I'm done with trucking, except my foreman wanted me to have it in a emergency.
Two months ago, my neighbor wanted me to drive plow truck for him this winter so I contacted our local SAAQ office in Quebec to see if there was a way to do it, but there was no way since I had my chance in Ontario, but this clerk knew what I was wanting to do and told me it i still in the rules and regs.
I'm not saying I'm right, but both Ontario and Qeubec says I am.

REX - I'm not disputing what you're sayin' but can you find an on-line link to post from one of their the Motor Vehicle Acts ? I only ask because I'd love to see how it's worded. I searched NB's act and couldn't find it anymore. I didn't try Maine. Cheers

SPEEDLOADER..... You are not the only one having problems finding these web pages or information about this, Ontario web pages don't give me any info, so I sent MTO an e-mail asking about it, when they answer, I will let you know.
Quebec don't show anything either, so do as I did earlier, call them at 1-800-361-7620 and ask, I spoke to them about 2 months ago.
The Canadian AZ or class 1 and the U.S. CDL is of equal value in both countries by agreements dating back to 1988.
I would look up the Province or state that you are inquiring about and call their Division of Motor vehicles and ask, I don't understand why it is so hard to find online what we are discussing?
