All this depends on what you are going to do? Are you going to get a CDL, authority and go legal? Or do what they do on shipping wars? To run a 1 ton and a 5 car.

    1. Rear axle should be a Dana 80 it will handle the weight is recommend a set of air bags on the back axle though.
    2. You will need to be over 26k gross so you will need a class A CLD
    3. You will need to keep a log and you will need operating authority.
    4. In the right gear that truck shouldn't have trouble stopping or slowing down coming off a grade. Gcvwr on my 3/4 tonis 20k ive ran her up and down grades at 23k and been able to stop and hold the weight back using my gears
    5. If you're legal DOT won't say much when you pull onto the scale other than let me see your cab card (check your gross) and maybe ask to see your log and your medical card.

A 5 car is WAY too much for a dually.

Same answers here as on AE- a Dana 80 is only good for 11k, and that's the Dana rating. Any of the big 3 will downrate it due to suspension limitations. If you still decide to go this route, get at least a 5500 and expect so-so mileage and do it all legit. And I'm sure whatever you saw was not a 1-ton- if I ever saw someone running 5 cars with a 1 ton I'd slash his tires before he killed someone.....

How do they think that's even right? Are these new trucks, and are they within RAWR?

Hell yeah I pay attention to that crap- I see a 1 ton pulling 5 cars, I get the hell away from him. And in the front, so when he can't stop in time and plows into the rear of a minivan full of kids, I'm as far in front of the traffic jam as possible. I've had 9500 lbs on my dually axle before, and it handled it, but only with airbags and a helper spring. I know a 1 ton "can" do a lot, but there's a lot it shouldn't do.
