I called Industry Canada to try and aquire the licence to be able to transmit on a VHF radio to use LADD1 and LADD2. They told me that they cannot issue a licence to non Canadiens.

Apparently I could be legal by only listening to it, but not legal to transmit. However, the radio is "programable" in the sense that a tech could do the Mars/Cap upgrade. Apparently a "programable" radio without a licence is illegal to even possess. I certainly could not "program" it myself.

I have thought of unplugging the Mic, which I would wonder if doing so would make me legal, but I'm doubting even that is the answer to not getting my radio confiscated by the mounties.

What are you USA guys who run the ALCAN, doing?

A lot of Americans come thru here from Alaska with a VHF. I wouldn;t worry about it.

I'm not sure which HAM frequecies you speak of, but all I really wanted to use (RX & TX) are the LADD channels;

154.100Mhz (Ladd-1) open trucker channel, (like CB 19 in the states)

158.940Mhz (Ladd-2) Weigh station channel

The fact is canada and the usa allow the use of both CB and HAM radios in each others countries. It makes no sense to me that if you want to get a license to use a radio and you do not plan ot living there that they mike no exception for truckers like your self to do just that. WE DO NOT have LADD type radios here they do so why not allow someone who is willing to get a license for THEIR system to do so :biggrin_2556: sounds dumb to me .....

If I remember correctly, 154 MHZ is in the public safety band. I would not transmit on it you might be on a local municipal police base in the US.

From http://www.netcom.army.mil/mars/freq.aspx
"U.S. Army MARS frequencies are spread throughout the HF band (3-30MHz)."

From http://navymars.org/national/marsltr.html
"Possess a station capable of operating on the MARS HF frequencies (2.0 - 30 Mhz). "

They also have VHF freq. (148.375/975 frequency pair) is one example.

WTH are you talking about?

A driver driving through Canada wants to use a public frequency used by drivers in Canada. Simple.

Good Lord, does anybody read anymore?
