I've heard of causing stoplights to change simply by keying up. I want to know what frequency, what mode, how much modulation, and how much power.

I had a similar experience. Had a Cobra 29 driving a Golden Eagle 150, transmitting through a Wilson 500 mag mount on the cab of my pickup. While sitting at a Sonic drive-in restaurant, I wasn't aware that my antenna was touching the metal awning. When I keyed up, I talked over the music speakers, the order-taking system, and the manager came out to inform me that she heard me through the cordless phone!

I believe Motorola makes (or used to make) transistors suitable for use in VHF amplifiers.

Good question...not sure....I heard in the old days when things such as garage door openers ran off of 27 MHz, you could turn on your amp and key up....and make ones garage door go up or down.

These days I believe garage door openers run off UHF so I don't think it would work now.

I'd be afraid since you say the metal was touching the metal awning, that you'd round out the amp. Though I can see coming over the speakers; on my pick up truck, I can sit right next to the house and fire up either 4 pill amp I have, and the family can hear me thru the computer speakers, sometimes the TV and even sometimes the door bell starts buzzing....add to that I have also have a an old Kenwood stereo and an Ibanez guitar amp you can hear me clear as day thru....and I have a 102 whip on my truck....yet I put the same amp in the house on my Imax 2k and I don't bleed thru anything but maybe the Ibanez and the Kenwood and the Imax is closer to the house than I park and taller too....wierd...

if you give tubes time to warm up no problem with them,i have been running tube amp (elkin) since 1990 never replaced tubes

No offense taken, they are all the same to me. I have been scrapping them out if I get deals on them for the parts, can't see putting dirty junk on the air when I can use the parts to build or repair something of quality

Motorola under another company makes everything from LF to SHF. Toshiba had good quality control but wasn't the leader for these parts.

I'm guessing that you are running that Elkin with sweep tubes unless you have had it converted to something else. finding those tubes today are a pia, so I would think you've been luck or use the amp sparingly.

By the way that design (grid driven, grounded cathode) came out somewhere in 1957. The quality of the amp is on par with BGII or another big amp builder of the 70's/80s.
