    Ok thanks.
    So Not Legal but possible.

    FCC is weak.
Just look at all those guys running illegal amps on CB.
Unless you're constantly interfering with somebody, chances are nothing will happen.

    http://home.provide.net/~prsg/murs_faq.htm

Here is a FAQ that will answer alot of questions I see here. Like the fact that you can convert old mobile radios to MURS. You DO have to follow some rules. I have been looking for MURS mobiles and it seems no one made one. I found a 63 page report by the FCC on the public meetings for this band and it seems Motorola and Tandy were against opening the band.

From what I can tell, the intercom and commercial industries jumped on this band with radio controlled gates and other innovations as this band allowed data transmission. Preppers (aka emergency prepardness folks) Like the parimiter alarm capibilities. If you watch YouTubes on MURS you will see people that love tehm and people that say don't waste your money. I have spent about $400 so far and I want more items for my system. Be sure to do what you want for your needs and don't listen to others tell you which systems or equipment to buy.

I have an HT and an electric eye by Dakota Alert in my truck. If anyone breaks in my rig, I get an alert instantly anywhere I am in a 2 mile or so radius. Like the old "Page Alerts" the companies installed, but this one is totally wireless and there is nothing to install. The electric eye is an IR inside a box with a radio powered by 6 AA cells. It just sits anywhere you sit it. Instead of a pager, you have the HT which can talk to other HT's like if your kid is along.

I have heard of truckers having MURS in company trucks so all the drivers can talk to each other. I've seen ham call signs on trucks more these days. Usually on the mirror bracket so you can see it when you pass them. If MURS were to catch on, we would need a way to show other drivers we had a unit on board. A sticker or light or something, like when the ITA drivers ran those blue lights in the windows.

As for Walmart, remember, the MURS rules say that old Business Band License holders are "grandfathered" and do have first priority on channels 4 & 5. They can also run more watts use repeaters, as long as their license is active where the MURS folks can't.

BTW there are no privately held channels I know of, except by Gov't agencies like DWP or The Gas Company (like private, but still a public utility). All Business Band users always shared the channel with 5 or 6 companies. I worked for a small alarm response company on a repeater on Oat Mountain in Los Angeles, we had a limo company that would not monitor the channel and the man would drop *F*bombs at his drivers. Every now and then, my boss would go park 100 feet from the repeater and key down for 5 minutes. When he would un-key, he would ask Sunset Limo if they were willing to behave now. When their dispatcher would swear at him, he would do it again. After a couple hours of threats and swearing, Sunset Limo would be civil... for about2 months and we would have to go do this ritual all over again lol. After 2 years, we couldnt take it anymore and switched freq's and repeaters.

I don't think repeaters were allowed on the "color dot/star" frequencies

    Hi Turbo T

Well there are mobile radios that have the ability to talk/monitor all of the FM bands and all Police, Fire, EMS on analog. Of course they are kinda sorta illegal on MURS/FRS/DOT freq's as the minimum power levels are at 5 watts. For commercial/amateur radio one needs to be licensed and as you already know, operators should never key up or communicate on Police, Fire or EMS freq's.

When S.H.T.F (preppers/doomsdayers and others) during emergency power outages, tornado's, snow, flooding etc. you use any means available to communicate whether you are licensed or not!

    Here are those radios.
    TYT TH 9800 136-174mhz and 400-470mhz

    BAOJIE BJ9900 QUAD BAND 29/ 50/ 144/ 430mhz
    ANYTONE AT 9800 QUAD BAND 29/ 50/ 144/ 430mhz
WOUXUN KG UV950P QUAD BAND also has FM/AM radio and ShortWave
WOUXUN KG UV 920P DUAL BAND freq's similar to TH 9800

And there are a few others. I was selling Chinese two way radios for awhile. Depending on the terms, I may return to offering two way radios in the future.

In my opinion, every OTR driver should (get their ham license) and know how to operate a dual band handheld or mobile 2m/70cm radio and how to access repeaters using PL tones, +/- offsets and the proper CTCSS digits.

It would only be a matter of a gentlemen's (ladies included) agreement amongst truck drivers (similar to cb Ch 19), to chose one MURS, FRS & DOT frequency that we agree to use nationwide during emergencies.
I already have the frequencies we could possibly use!

    aimhigh!

One could always run a little 5 watt Baofeng HT on MURS with a mobile antenna. Like the Comet CA-2x4SRB. The antenna will cost twice as much as the $40 radio. But it will do MURS, GMRS, and FRS.

I agree with Aimhigh that every OTR driver should (get their ham license) and know how to operate a dual band handheld or mobile 2m/70cm radio and how to access repeaters using PL tones, +/- offsets and the proper CTCSS digits. And if you use one of the radios that he said all you need to do is program it. Software Free of charge. And no Mods are needed.

It doesn't exactly say in the FCC rules. I got that from a couple FAQ's that HAMers and others made. They said "on channel 4 and 5 you may hear businesses using repeaters and higher power... yada yada yada" Just passing it along. I'm not calling anyone wrong here, but don't forget a repeater can be a box in a warehouse, just as well as it could be on a mountain top. Large buildings have low power repeater sytems with internal antennas you cant hear very far away. Security and maintenance can talk to other HT units 50 stories up. I think this is the kind of repeater they are talking about. It's an extremely common type system in Business Band.
