Got a wilson 5k, but honestly i got no idea how to tune it. My swr is 1.5 but as soon i speak it jumps to 3. Is this normal? Im getting frustrated with this radio because it has so many features that you simply feel like your not using it at its full potential.
Any suggestion how to tune (calibrate) the antenna to these radio.

Try turning down the mic gain.
What you're describing is a classic symptom of overmodulation. If you're splattering signal outside the CB band, the antenna is reflecting the out of band signal back to the transmitter, which shows up as a higher SWR.
My bet is that whoever "tweaked and peaked" your radio disabled the limiter.rabbiporkchop Thanks this. -
is that a good or bad thing? sorry for my ignorance.
-
It's a bad thing. If that is what is happening, it means that whoever did your "tune up" screwed up your radio.
The sad part is that most "radio techs" have no real idea of what they are doing; they're just following a guide they found on the Internet. Just listening to all the bad audio on channel 19 nearly makes my ears bleed.rabbiporkchop Thanks this. -
Thanks for the info, Ill be contacting the tech on Monday.

Horse pucky..I know its an old thread but still horse pucky

I know it's an old thread but I'm wondering if he's using the automatic SWR feature on the radio or an acutal SWR meter to get his readings? My 655 shows a 2.0:1 but when hooked to my external meter it is a 1.3:1 and will climb to 1.4:1 under 100% modulation.

I just tried that same thing on my new 955's meter..Didnt budge from from lowest to highest power..No patch cord to try it with my dosy meter..
Shouldnt move anyways..rabbiporkchop Thanks this. -
Mine does, it starts at 2.0:1 and will pretty much peg the meter. My "power meter" on the radio also max's out when in reality it's not even doing 60 watts PEP.
