    Steveo412,

Handlebar's post was a very good, and informative one. He hit it spot on.

The key to "good range" is NOT an amp....it is (1.) the antenna and (2.) the coax. The amp is just a supplement. The antenna is the heart and soul of any radio.

Running an amp on a radio with a mediocre antenna/coax, is just like dropping a 454 big block Chevy V8 into a 1971-1977 Chevy Vega, but keeping the stock 13" tires/wheels and the stock rear end. You'll be spinning your wheels, going nowhere fast.

If you don't already have these two items, look into an older Wilson 2000 antenna and RG8X coax, preferbly not the BarJUNK stuff sold in truck stops. Better coax would be Times Microwave LMR 240, but you have to buy this online or at a ham radio shop. A better antenna would be a 108 whip from MFJ but if it's going on a semi, it'll be 9 ft. tall....but you'll have the world by the ears.

Then the antenna needs tuned to the vehicle. You'll need an SWR meter from Radio Shack p/n 21-1534 to do this. Follow the directions, and raise or lower the antenna stinger (whip) to get as low of an SWR across all 40 channels.....unless you only use 1 channel always, then you can tune for the lowest SWR on THAT channelonly.

Now, as for your Cobra 29 LX, since you want to run an amp, what I would do is this....find someone that can take the delta tune on the front of the radio, and convert it into an adjustable carrier. Because on most (but not all) small amps, require no more than a 1-2 watt drive. Your radio does roughly 3.5-4 watts. By having the (otherwise useless in today's day and age) delta tune knob converted to an adjustable carrier, it will allow you to turn the radio down to 1 watt for running an amp, and back up to 4 watts if you decide to run without an amp.

I can't comment on the RM Italy amps but I've read good things about them. I'm more partial to something like a Palomar 400 with the 4 SD-1446 transistors, or maybe a Texas Star 500 with 4 of the 2SC2879's inside.

Tubo thank you for taking time to write. I bought a wilson 1000 roof mount and my swr is 1.1 to 1.2. The 1000 came with cable. Is the 1000 at the bottom end? Is there a big difference between the 2000? Can you guys possibly point me in the right place to purchase an amp. Amazon doesnt have much and im not really sure of they are knock offs or what not. And I am planning on sending the radio and amp in to get it dialed in. I will be doing the knob conversion. Thanks again for everyones imput. Sure is fun playing with these cbs.

The Wilson Trucker antennas use the 3/8-24 mirror type of mount.
