I know there is a CB section for this but wanted other Owner Operators feedback on this.

For years I've been a huge fan of Galaxy radios , from my old 10 meter base with linear amps and a old lollipop D-104 to mobile units for my truck..

What would you say is a good radio for long range (not skip to talk to the Bahamas, I could careless about that)

Though I want to be able to get out there a good distance and get a good receive signal as well?

I had a friend tell me to look into Rangers & Star??? something or another..

I would like to push a little more then the standard 5-20 watts, but I don't need a 1000 watts in the truck either.

Just some input on a a good solid radio with sideband and you know the fun little extras(echo board, key ramp ups etc)

If you have a place to recommend please put their info in here or a website link to a reputable vendors website. The old school radio techs are a dying breed.

Thanks and be safe out there everyone....

I just run a cobra 29. It's used and I have no idea what's been done on the inside. I'd love a big rig, but I don't know enough about radios, I'd just be like every other doofus flying down the road sending out harmful interference.

I like the Mirage 36,(I was told it was built by Ranger, but don't know for sure) all of the bang of a Galaxy 3600HP in a Cobra 29 sized case. Mine is 5 years old never had to reopen the case since the original peak and tune. I get nothing but compliments and several "what kinda radio is that driver". IMO an awesome radio. When you ask where's a good radio shop it like asking about politics or religion or who builds the best pick-up truck, its just going to start an argument, but I got mine from "Radio Active Radio's" followed his directions for installation EXACTLY including power wire size, coax length, and brand, height and location of antenna. Yes I have read all of the negative reviews, I also know that 90% of people only post to forums like this to either ask a question or complain about poor service, almost no one ever gets on forums like this to brag about what a good job someone else did. I talked to him(and several others) on the phone several times before making my decision, and suggest you do the same. I do not suggest that you take my word for it, what worked very well for me might not work for you. What ever radio you decide make sure you install it exactly where and how he radio shop tells you to, when you step up to a "big radio" its not going to work correctly with a magnet mount Wal-Mart antenna. I'm just sayin'.....

I've had a General Lee for the last 5 years and never had a problem with it! I run it with a wilson 2000 and a Roadking mic...It's reasonably priced too! I think it's just under $200...Well worth the money...

Just recently purchased the new Galaxy DX 99V2. Great radio 40 to 50 watts, awesome modulation, good rx, and sideband. for roughly $300.00 i would highly recomend giving it your consideration.

If range is what you want, you should look to upgrade your antenna system, first. Always use quality parts (coax, antenna, etc) look at different mounting locations on your truck, the higher the better. The longer the antenna, the better. The more metal directly underneath the antenna, the better. Do some bonding with flat copper braid, regular ol wire will not work! Basically, tie all the metal parts of your cab, to the frame, with the braid.
A $500 radio, still won't get out on a $10 antenna system!! But a $10 radio, will get out on a $500 antenna system!!

As far as radios go, Imo they don't make em like they used to. I'm a fan of the old classics. Whatever you get, buy from a reputable shop and have a frequency alignment done, not just a peak and tune. If they tell you they don't do frequency alignments, shop elsewhere. Just my .02

DTB radio in Carlise PA. Great old school tech, does mail order work. I've heard good things about Bobs cb also, though I've never bought from him.

I found a really old cobra 29 with purple knobs, but the lady wouldn't come down in price. Settled on a used cobra that's from the 90's

Excellent post! The tech I use is on DTB's White List of good CB shops. But you are so right, not too many high quality techs around anymore. I watched my tech/buddie go thru a Galaxy tonight undoing what the tweaknicians had done so he could make the proper adjustments and get the SSB working properly and everything on frequency. He griped the whole time asking me why would somebody do this to a radio.....blah, blah, blah! So lucky to have him close by!

Man! That's opening a can of worms, your sure to get a number of different post saying this or that radio is the best, truth is? It will be. Your own opinion that matters, some claim Cobras are great radios, I personally don't, in my experience, galaxy beats them, other say, sorry your wrong, Cobra beats Galaxy, best of luck fin ding what you want
