If you guys are really serious about wanting the best sounding set-up for the money, then you need to get away from those Wilson antenna's, and look at the Predator's...

The SW Dual Coil Predator 10K was designed just for mounting on Big Rig Mirror Brackets..."SW" stands for "Short Whip", and after tuned this 10K antenna stands only about 48" tall...

i'm sorry to disapoint u as well as disagree with you, but the Predator 10K was not designed for big rigs, it was intended for Key Down Competitions, however yes i will agree they r excellent antennas. they are also expensive like the monkey mades.
i run a Mirage 6600 with Wilson Siverload and i get amazing reception and distance.i'm also pretty loud wiht my RoadKing mic...i'm running bearfoot and have been told numerous times to turn "my box" off...lol:biggrin_25525:

I hate to disappoint you too...However you have been misinformed about the Predator line of antenna's...

I am head of Marketing for CowTown Antenna's, and Technical Support Adviser for CowTown. (Manufacture of the Predator 10K)

The Predator 10K was designed for those who want to get the most out of their radios, but can't run 108" Whip antenna's. They were never designed for Competition "Key-Down" events, which if you have ever been to a Key-Down, then you should know that most of the people at Key Downs, run Fighting Sticks, and NOT Coiled Antenna set-up's...

The Predator 10K, that I posted the picture of, is a "SW" Predator 10K...

And as I stated, this antenna was designed for Big Rig's. "SW" stands for "Short-Whip". The coils in this antenna have 1 1/2 extra turns, which allows the antenna to tune shorter. (48-52" average over-all height) For those who can't do the math, this is about the same height as a 4' fiberglass antenna...

Comparing this antenna to a Monkey Made, is like comparing apples to oranges. Yes they both are large open coil design antenna's, but that is about all that they have in common...

The Predators weigh half as much as the MM's, and every part of the Predator 10K can be replaced if damaged. NO OTHER ANTENNA ON THE MARKET can do that...If you manage to break the shaft, where it screws onto your mount, you can order a New shaft...(they just screw together), Damage a coil...order a new one....You don't have to buy a whole new antenna! Just the part that is damaged...

In comparison test, the Predator 10K line of antenna's have consistently out preformed all other mobile antenna's or were at least equal in comparison to 108" Whips, or 102" Whips using a spring...

Price? Expensive? What would you call "Expensive?"

I'm willing to bet, if your really into having a knock-out radio system, that you probably have spent over $200 on your radio gear (easy over $200)

So why would you want to compromise on the antenna, when that's the most important part of your radio set-up?

Predator 10K Antenna's are priced from $60 to $75. (little more in some areas)

There are right now basically 4 models to chose from:
    1. The Single Coil 10K
    2. The Dual Coil 10K
    3. The "SW" Dual Coil 10K (pictured)
    4. And the Newest Version, the Single Coil Comp. 10K...

All can be purchased with different length shafts (6,9,12,17,22, and 27" shafts available)

Reason for the different shaft lengths, is for different mounting options.

The Predator 10K is by far the most popular mobile DX Antenna on the market, because of the Air Craft Aluminum it's made from makes it extremely light-weight, yet it can handle well over 10,000w's, and at the same time, will improve your RX to the point you'll be hearing stations that you normally would have never known were out there...

And you'd be better off, if you NEED an antenna that is shorter, with those that have ONLY ONE COIL instead of two. WHY? The only reason to use a coil in an antenna is to shorten it. Coils add RESISTANCE, not a good thing when it comes to antennas. Yet they become a necessity when height and length is a factor. While BIG coils lessen the resistance due the size of the material used to make it, using additional coils only reduces the performance. SO why do people GO for the "dual-coil" look? It is psychological, it LOOKS like it REALLY must put out a better signal, and, to some, it looks cool. To the builder, the coils can be used to manipulate the impedance (another measure of resistance) of the antenna and make it tune easier. It it "tunes" easier, then it must get out better, right? :yes2557: Well, maybe.

Nothing wrong with coil antennas' that's not what I am saying. They can be a necessity. Perform better in a static test between coily units and 102" whips? Probably not. But compromise makes the world go around, and on a truck, the coils are likely a necessary part of CB radio!

Your right to a point...Everything you said about Resistance 0f Dual Coils is true, but the reason CowTown Antenna's started making them was because of constant request of Truckers complaining about the Single Coil Predator being just way too tall for them to mount on their mirrors. (at 72" in total height, they had a point!)

And we already had the Dual Coil Predator, but still at 62" was still too tall, so we started tinkering around with adding more turns to the coils, so the height of the stinger could be shortened, without loosing much performance.

That's when the "SW" (short whip) Dual Coil Predator came out...And your right, the single coil Predator will dance all over the Dual Coils, but sometimes you just need a shorter antenna....

i bought a used regular dual coil 10k last year . its has a modular build style to change/repair sections if need be , or to just try something a lil different .
i currently run it with just the bottom coil and i drilled out the stinger hole just enough to use a fatter monkey made stinger in it . a wilson stinger would have fit but the both cost the same , i decided id be a lil different , lol .

i like my uniden 78 more than my export . i still have the export to use when i set up my base . a uniden with a good echo mic and a decent and properly tuned antenna/coax and mount is a very effective setup . uniden is also doing 30 and 40 buck rebates till the end of the year too .

No argument from me there! Each situation is different, each antenna has to be able to fit the application. And if you are dragging the top of the tunnel, sum'pin gotta be did! :biggrin_25525:

Hey Gearhead, I have a bunch of radio,s {been toying with them for 35 years} mobile and big bases and i run a blue lite General Lee with a 125 amp and a set of wilson 2000 longshaft truckers on a 2000-- t600 kw and i talk 30 to 40 miles on a bad day. You should get 20 miles with just the radio.:biggrin_25525: Of course i personally benched the radio and turned it down to 2.5 watts to run the amp with dual finals or not you gotta adjust the radio for the amp or youll overdrive it and it will sound like $$$$ if ya get me? without the amp and peaked it should cost you around $350 to $375. I run cophased. Just a little secret when you set a radio to an amp and then put it in a truck and turn the amp on you will need to recheck the (swr) with it installed and turned on(amp). The more power you put thru an enteana the higher it will drive an swr(fact). To acheive a 1.5 or better swr with an amp online is to either lengthen or shorten your jumper coax between the radio and amp and rechecking your standing wave everytime you change lenths till you acheive your lowest reading.
