I think my miles per week compared with Roehl are on this thread somewhere (roughly 2800/wk when running or about 10K +/- a few/month with home time included). Mileage wise both were very similar but Crete paid better. My time with Crete was overall pretty good although I spent a lot of effort in working the system with getting unproductive loads t-called at terminals and drop yards to keep running. Like most places you just have to learn how to deal with the BS as best as you can and make it work for you. Fly under the radar as best as you can and hope you have a good terminal manager like I did.

No you generally have to take what is offered unless you have a valid reason (not enough hours, etc.) not to.
