GALLATIN COUNTY, KY (FOX19) - Gallatin County Sheriff Josh Neale will meet with the Commonwealth Attorney tomorrow to discuss a crash that took the life of a Louisville who was working to clean up previous crash.

The crash happened on southbound 71 in Gallatin County not far past the Boone County line. Neale says 53-year-old Dannye Allen died when a box truck driving in the open high-speed lane of Southbound came up upon a slower-moving pickup truck, and went through the cones into the closed low-speed lane, where Allen was working, hitting and killing him.

Allen worked for a cleanup company in Louisville that was called in by a towing company to clean up a tractor-trailer that flipped Wednesday morning.

The driver of the box truck told police his truck swerved when he hit his brakes to avoid hitting the pickup truck. Sheriff Neale says experts are examining that the straight truck.

Neale says he doesn't know if this case will result in charges.

They were in the final stages of clean up of a previous wreck... they had signs... cones trucks... it did not help.... none of that can protect you from a heavy truck. This is a sobering reminder as I was working an accident at the same time on a different roadway... I was protected because we CLOSED the roadway while the FD EMS and we the towers did our jobs..... Sometime traffic has to be sacrificed so we may all go home.

We are deeply saddened to report a worker from Gra-Kat Environmental was killed this afternoon, while working with Big Rig Towing on the overturned tractor trailer at the 67 mile marker south bound I-71. They were finishing up the clean up, from the accident prior in the day gathering up there equipment when a box truck crossed the cones into the workers, injuring 3 and Killing one. Gra-Kat was helping off load the overturned trailer and also providing traffic control. The Right hand lane was closed and was clearly marked with signs and cones and also a power generated flashing sign. It is not clear to GCVideoNews what the driver of the box truck was doing or why it cut through the cones. Big Rig Towing and Gra-Kat had all their saftey equipment in place. From what we can find out, the one gentleman from Gra-Kat that was killed was a former Fire Chief around Louisville, Gra-Kat is out of Shelbyville KY.. Our Sympathy goes out to his family.

By Connie Leonard - bio | email
LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Fire districts in Jefferson and Bullitt counties are mourning the loss of one of their own. Former Edgewood chief and current Fairdale and Nichols volunteer firefighter Danny Allen was hit and killed Feb. 9 on Interstate 71 while trying to help a co-worker.
Allen was working for a Shelbyville company on an environmental cleanup in Gallatin County. His loved ones tell us, it's no surprise he died trying to help someone.
"It's really been tough on all of us because it was so unexpected," said Fairdale Fire Chief Don Wittry, "Danny was such a great guy," he told us.
A respected and dedicated firefighter, loving father of two and a faithful friend. That was the description heard over and over of the 53-year-old Allen.
"He was never down about anything, he would make a joke and make you smile, that's the kind of guy he was," said Fairdale Captain Josh Underwood. "He loved his kids and loved his brotherhood of the fire department."
Allen was working an environmental cleanup on I-71 in northern Kentucky when he was killed.
"He was on his job and he was doing cleanup, they had it clearly marked," Wittry said.
Even though it was a safe zone on the highway, police say a box truck in the fast lane came up on a slow moving pick-up and veered right into the work area hitting Allen. Two other workers were hurt. One of them told Allen's family he tried to push them out of harm's way.
Wittry calls Allen's death a loss to the community because he loved helping people,
"He's been a supervisor and he knew what needed to be done, everybody respected him for that," said Wittry. "He was just a great friend and always happy about stuff so you know, this is really tough not only was he popular but, he was very good at what he did."
"It was devastating," said Fairdale firefighter Brad Dotson of hearing the news. "I couldn't believe it."
For young firefighters like Dotson, Allen was both a teacher and a friend.
"There was many a night where we sat down and had a conversation about the fire department and life in general," Dotson said. "He helped me out with a lot of stuff I was going through and he was always there for you."
Those in Allen's firehouse know he would want his death to help save another life. That's why they will continue asking drivers to be cautious around accident zones on the highway.
"Just be patient with us," Underwood said. "If that person in the car was someone in your family, you would want us to do the same for them."
Gallatin County Sheriff Josh Neale says he is not certain if this is a criminal case or just a terrible accident. The investigation is continuing.
Funeral arrangements were still pending for Allen, whose brother and son are both firefighters.

For the record, I had spoken on twitter with the username above prior to his becoming a truck driver and sporadically off and on afterward. While I am an active twitter user and have pretty good relationships with most of my twitter trucker friends, this particular one was more of an acquaintance that I spoke to pretty rarely up to this instance. I knew from the moment I saw the picture he was going to be canned, I pretty much told him this.

I am not sure what exactly is the point of this thread. I did not however know someone else died as a result of this wreck. However, regardless it was not the original accidents fault that this other idiot killed someone. It could have been any incident where that non attentive driver went through cones. It could have been a construction area or a backup due to something else.

Mike was fired, his DAC was dinged, he got the appropriate response to the situation. I was pretty sure from the moment I saw the picture that he was going to be fired. I am not going to defend the the roll over, in the end I do not know what he was facing in terms of pressure from dispatch. But at the same time I am not wiling to accept 'dispatch made me drive' as a valid excuse. It is tragic someone died as a result of this. But blaming the original accident for the death is unfair. If two cars get into a fender bender and pull to the shoulder and a semi runs into them both it would be a similar scenario. It wouldn't be the cars fault.

I am not sure if you are trying to blame Mike directly for the indirect death that happened at the scene, or if you are annoyed it wasn't mentioned more (this is the first I've heard of it), or what. I am going with the first thing because of some of the comments.

As for the truck being over the curb like that, you cannot tell me that you NEVER EVER made ANY mistakes once soever like that. Sure that particular mistakes is sort of wtf, but its not the worse I've seen in terms of silly newbie mistakes that didn't hurt anyone.

    As for this quote:
You have the context wrong. Perhaps you do not understand how twitter works. Mike asked me what I was doing, and I replied I, aka IROCUBABE, was strongly considering going Owner Op. To which he replied Prob not enuf. Exprnc..

And if you mean to say lets hope I don't go Owner Op? Well kiss my grits bud. ;)
