I was working for NFI ( a joke of a company i know ) but it was a pretty good deal. NFI was the house carrier of the Walmart DC in johnstown ny, which was about 5 miles from my house.
I would show up to the DC, grab a truck ( slip seat which i didnt enjoy ) grab a pre loaded trailer and head off to Long island ( I volunteered for the Long island loads because they pay the best ( most miles ) )
I would leave around 330 am, deliver 2 or 3 stops on long island and Dead head back, usually home by 1 - 3pm. 500-540 miles round trip. I was paid 40 cents per mile and 21 dollars per stop ( first stop free.)
So on average i would make about 200-260 ddollars per day for a 10-12 hour day and be home every night. if you worked a 6th day you got an extra 50 bucks plus the trip pay.
it was very easy to make 12-13-1400 a week. even only working 5 days it was easy to do 1000-1100 a week. because of my knowledge of NYC and Long island and the times i was leaving in the morning i hit almost zero traffic. this was a very nice gig as far as i was concerned but i was informed that NFI was losing the account and being replaced by Swift.
I had nothing against swift even though there is a stigma about the company, i wasn't particulaly happy about driving a swift truck and having a predetermined notion about me that i was a bad driver.
Swift was offering me ( with 6 years expirence ) 48 cents per mile, 15 dollars per stop. a signifigant raise. Also keep in mind that walmart to walmart frieght has priority, you are not at these stores for longer than 30 minutes to an hour sometimes.

i decided to check the craigslist adds for jobs as i didnt want to work for swift. found a guy who was an owner op with his own authority, he had 2 trucks, he drove one and was looking for a driver for the other.
i replied and got the job. The truck is a very nice 2003 freightliner classic xl with a 500 detroit. Wide open truck and paper logs ( finally )
he said he would give me 50% of the net. i told him i am used to making about 1100 a week and would expect about that.
This week i drove 1400 miles, i Did stay out a couple nights to make delivering easier, i didnt want to bring the load home and then have to get up super early to deliver it. I dont mind staying out if i am assigned to the truck and can keep it clean and neat, im not sleeping in a truck some slob just used.
i pretty much just go from upstate NY to mid-pennsylvania area and back. i only about 2 round trips last week, 1397 miles. He was very happy with the way i keep the truck and they way i work, ( his previous driver was a complete idiot ) he payed me 1100$ for the 1397 miles, plus I lumped one of my own loads at ES3 york PA, it was a straight pull, no breakdown, i did my trailer and his, took 1.5 hours and i got 220$ for that.

first week : 1397 miles + lumping 1 load = 1320$ i worked roughly 35 hours that week. the only catch is not i have to sometimes wait a little longer to load or unload and i am staying out a couple nights a week. but almost 1 dollar a mile, nice assigned truck, no speed restrictions, and loose leaf logs, this seems like a pretty sweet deal to me.

Also, if there are guys in upstate NY looking for a good paying local gig i would reccomend contacting swift about that walmart DC dedicated stuff. thats good money and the easiest work. doing what i was doing you could expect 11-1200 a week easily for about 50-55 hrs work home everyday.

also, i had 3 full days off at home that week. im usually supposed to have weekends off. because of where we pick up and deliver i could almost be home everyday but sometimes like i said its just easily to sleep in the tuck depending on when and where im delivering

Wow. Personally I would have went with Swift then. You were already making good money, then would have been making more with a STABLE company. You're taking a big risk with the small company you went with, whereas with Swift there wasn't any risk of the company folding, cutting back, skimping on maintenance, etc etc etc. I hope it all works out for you.

Just because its a small company does NOT mean its unstable.. And the OP won't be micro managed by some tart 500 miles away sitting at a computer who's never been in a truck.

I have to agree with you on this.. Small does not mean unstable. There are many o/o's with only 1-2 trucks that have a solid steady business. Though not many pay as well as this guy. But, come on, Swift?? That was once a 1 truck business??
