MAY Trucking Co.

Hey All,

New here didnt see any MTC stuff other than some kid in training who cant pass a test or something like that, so I figured I would put my .02cents in, on a scale of 1-10 May is a solid 8.5-9 all in all its a good company they love to run you which is a really good thing, May does not like a sitting truck 80% of the time you have a pre-plan before you even send your arrival call, the milage is there, a solo driver runs team runs, you would be shocked on how many times on a 6-8 week on the road that I do 5 weeks consist of coast to coast its great I love it.

13 speed trannys and the trucks are a step or two above the base model stripped down trucks you get the painted bumper and mirrors and a few extra guages (I know yee-haw what a deal) and you get to be part of a small company my Driver manager knows my name and never asks for my truck # its "Hey Rob" everytime I call, and I have his cell and home # try to get that out of any other Co. If you are one of those drivers that likes to do 6-8 weeks and runs anything and dont whine about it, your DM will literally BOW DOWN to you, trust me I am one.

Let me side track into a little story about what I wrote above, I am ex military did 2 stints in the desert, no A/C is not going to bother me much trust me, I just pointed out to him the my A/C dont work and a few other minor problems that are kinda bothering me, and breakdown a being a pain in the ### (nothing new trust me, welcome to trucking eh?) so he got me a load to the Brooks, OR Terminal and put me in a 06 Century, now thats a DM I can work for.

Anyways they say you need your haz-mat to run 48 states reefer, but Ive been running 48 since I started and never even had a haz-mat, there are no dedacated stuff with these guys, I know they do their own freight and some broker stuff (feel free to correct me on this) so every load you get is a new adventure, you can still be a real truck driver with May and enjoy the coverd docks, Manhattan, Trenton, Newark, I love the pike!, I loved the f-ed up old school docks back east I still feel like a real truck driver, not some USX or Interstate dist. Automatic driving easy life easy docks driver, I dont refer to them as truckers and never will, they are Steering Wheel Holders thats all they are, how can you be a truck driver if the trucks driving you?

Well as you can tell I am happy with May they Cut the pay scale its .30 to start, we hire students (I talked to a few trainers, and if we are getting a crappy name its cause of that) May Drivers stick together, you mess with one driver at a fuel island or the cafe and before you know it all the May drivers at the truck stop appear (thats a story of its own)

Well I am dont with this rant, I dont even know why I wrote this I just had an urge, I am on day 1 of my hometime and miss my rig already.

Hey Rob......Sounds like your happy with May. I haven't herd much negative stuff about them on these forums. I've talked to some May drivers at Georgia Pacific in Woodland Ca. They all seem to like the co. I'm going to put in a pre hire app with them today and see what happens. I had a DUI 20 or 30 years ago so I'm not sure if that will come up ?? Do you know anything about their background checking ?? Well maybe I'll see ya .. Sal

ya honestly it aint a bad company at all you got the typical knuckle heads in breakdown and night and weekend dispatch but all in all it worth it I looked at all the negative stuff on here about May and its all trainees not being able to pass a test or have a bad experience with a trainer, like I said I had a really good trainer, when I soloed out we both did a reset and he took me to the bar, good guy I talk to him to this day sadle he works for Crete now, I dont know too much about it I think 20+ years you shouldent even worry about it, do you have any exp?

Not sure how many times I've posted on here about breakdown, but it has got out of hand finally & my s/o is waiting at a motel to get a new truck. Wait til he adds up all the missed hours he could have driven!!

I'm sure it's a couple thousand dollars worth at least. His dm seems to be pretty good, but this is bad. It is a 07 Peterbilt that started out with 3000 miles. I'm going to find out when the truck was issued, figure out the miles he's driven subtract his three days off, to get an average. It doesn't look good.

Quoting Breakdown: Did you check your coolant level etc?...

S/O - What do you think I'm doing during pretrip inspection? (that could have been told only to me)

Day one take a tour of the terminal have a phyical (unless you have a card less then 6months old) and pee in a cup. Find out about the company and go over log books and go eat at one of the local Buffets.
Good luck.

Hey Rob

Great Post I'm in 2682 and what you said is pretty much how it is. I've been with May for 5years now and yes life is not perfect but they are sure bending over backwards to work with you when you have a problem with the truck or if you have a strong need to get home. Just home for a couple of days and found your post, good luck maybe I'll see ya at brooks or Layton.

I've talked to the pensacola, florida branch. I have a pre hire out of school. But was told that it didn't mean i was going get hire. Thats what they told me.So I said when do you thank you going to be hiring. she replyed check back in 30 days. So I did. she said that they would not be doing anythang until the thanksgiving. But my son girl friend dad is a driver for may. He been driving for may many years. runs only east to west. When he came in we talked, he told me that there was 4 trucks just sitting there. He talk to his guy; who said there empty waiting on driver to fill them. We talk that night and was going to see if he could pull some strings for me. He came back with this story of how they are on a hiring freeze for florida. Said there weeden out drivers. I saw the branch manger at the store he driving may mimi van; I said hello Asked how the hiring going. He told me they are waiting on trucks to become empty to fill them with studens drivers. He said that may was going to buy more trucks; but were waiting on the economy. So called today and she told me they were unable to do any hiring around the hoildays be cause tring to get loads in for drivers coming home and loads going out when they go back out. So I asked when do thank you might me doing any hiring. She siad try back in 60 days or so. Yea right!! what going on!!
