My BMI is 43. Yup, I'm obese.
So, if I'm DQd, can I go on the government dole like so many others??
Like everything else these days, I'll believe it when I see it.

A certain trucking company where I applied required another DOT Physical including neck size and BMI even though I already have a current DOT Medical Card as part of enrolling in truck driving school. It was a bit unsettling to discover that, according to the BMI Chart, I am classified as obese (32 BMI). Now, at 5'9" and 205 lbs I admit to being overweight (neck size 15.75), but to get to "normal" BMI, I would have to weigh no more than 160 lbs, which, I think, is what I weighed as a sophomore in high school. Whoever made up that BMI Chart is BS crazy IMHO.

ATX Thanks this.

Any good trucking company will require you to get a new DOT physical at a doctor of their chosing. So many DOT exams are just a "warm body" physical that good companies need to cover themselves.
There are a BUNCH of different screening reccomendations on sleep apnea BMI anyhwhere from 30 to 35 may trigger the DOT examiner issuing a temporary conditional DOT medical card pending completion of a sleep study.
All of these are currently reccomendations but speeches by Anne Ferro and other FMCSA staff say a rulemaking is coming soon.Last edited: Feb 22, 2013

Rules or guidelines make zero difference . If your sitting at the house for 3 weeks because a "Doctor " requires a test , I see no diff at all .

There is no DOT regulation about a driver's weight and the BMI is even losing creditability in the medical profession.
The DOD tried back in the late 80's & early 90's and quickly realized most of their fittest men and woman were being taken off active duty for having a high BMI rating. I'm a body builder and I was then too. In 1989 I was a drill instructor in the Marine Corps and I was removed from active duty for 90 days for having a high BMI. This is why most doctors are not even using the BMI system.
According to the BMI and my height I should weigh 182 pound but I'm 260 and have yet I only 7% body fat, muscles weights more than fat.RickG Thanks this.
