    new: BMI Body mass regulation

I'm an unemployed cdl driver in Florida. I prefer local dump truck over otr. But I'm about to lose it all. I called otr companies last week. Western Express said a new DOT regulation is coming out about bmi b/c some study produced 75 percent of drivers in crashes were over weight and bmi and sleep apnea were regulated. I haven't had to deal with bmi since the military. I heard there's going to be weight control programs mobile like the mobile churches for truckers type deal. DOT is coming out with many new regulations this year. Western Express has already put the program into effect. http://www.examiner.com/x-15044-Lexi...ving?#comments googled and found this

Lot of drivers are going to be out of work.

The article you linked was just someone's blog. There was no basis of fact in it. I clicked the link he referred to for Prime and couldn't see anywhere that BMI of 39 or less was required.

Also I'm not sure if you are aware of this but the doctors who are recommending these sleep studies to the FMCSA own or operate the sleep clinics involved in a lot of this testing. They are only pushing this so they can make money. Contact your congressman and senators and let them know you are opposed to these new rules.

Call Wendy then at Western Express in recruiting Nashville. It's not on Western Expresses website either. She asked my weight and height.

Some of the BMI-Sleep Apnea guidelines are actually insurance related, not DOT mandates. Even if DOT found exhaustive evidence that there was no correlation between BMI-Sleep Apnea and crash risk, a carrier can institute requirements of it's own. What many people don't realize, whether in the trucking industry or some other industry, is that companies can require certain things of employees that have no foundation in regulation. If DOT were to say, and it hasn't said, that drivers must have a BMI less than 39, a carrier is well within it's rights to say their drivers must have a BMI less than, say 35.
The following link takes you to an FMCSA(DOT) funded study done several years ago. Surprising results. There is more info out there. I've read it but don't have the links at my fingertips.

I saw something the other day that strongly made me suspect that is true. I saw a plain white tractor pulling what looked to be a 53' dropdeck van, except that it had very square very ugly very uniform windows along the side, and it said in very plain black ugly lettering "Federal highway safety administration". I'd like to know what was going on with that thing. It wasn't one of those HD RVs, it was a regular road tractor pulling what looked to be a regular trailer that had been converted into an RV. Very odd.

I know a guy that works for a large carrier and he said he was at a safety meeting and the drivers were informed about the rules regarding BMI were going to be enforced by the DOT. They told the drivers that when they get pulled around at the scales the dot would possibly be checking their blood pressure as well as weight and height when 2010 goes into full swing.

Sounds a little over the top to me, but that's what they were told according to him.

There are NO DOT rules about BMI. Ask the guy that you know to ask his safety people to show him the rule. I'd be willing to bet that the BP checking and height/weight checking thing is BS too! As a matter of fact....I'd bet a lot!
