Just went for my DOT physical renewal, everything went fine, then the Dr. Pulled out a tape measure and measured my neck, he said my neck is a little to big he said and wont give me a DOT card until i take a sleep apnea test, has anyone heard of this or had this done? I've had my physical done every 2 years since 1992 and never this done.

I tell ya, Whats this country gonna do next! -
I may be mistaken here. But I think starting in May of 2014 Doctors that want to continue giving DOT physicals have to be certified and put on a approved list.
To stay on that list they are bound by law to measure your neck and BMI. (Body Mass Index) If they are too large they must send you for a sleep apnea study. Some Doctors do the study. Some Doctors send you to a clinic. If you fail the test you have to get a CPAP machine.

I can't find anything at FMCSA that there is any regulation at this point. I do know that many companies go beyond the federal dot requirements and then act like it is the government behind it. I am overweight and just had my physical with nothing said. Granted I would like to drop about 20 pounds maybe this will be the motivation. BTW I don't know if it makes a difference but I have my physicals done in the same doctors office as my regular physician. He handles my medical issues and the Nurse Practitioner, or Physician's Assistant handle dot physicals. Since I'm an owner/op I pay for the physical not the company I haul freight for.

I am over weight but not by much i'm 6'4" tall and 295#. He said my bmi is 37 and needs to be 35. Been this way all my life, but waiting for the Dr to set this sleep apnea test up my DOT card just expired. He said this is not his problem, he has to do this by law and there is no way around it. Yes i'm insured but with high deductible my company will only pay for the DOT nothing else. All the clinics & Dr offices do this where I'm from.

Unless I'm missing something this doctor is either misinformed, or has a reason to push sleep studies. I know the medical board has recommend that medical examiners should screen for sleep issues, but there has been no rule making to require it. I could be wrong, but I haven't seen anything anywhere and that includes OOIDA. I guess I'll join Weight Watchers, I lose 20 pounds and I go from 37 to 33.7. What I love is how above 35 you have it and below it you don't.
