Is Body Mass Index a Bad Measure?

by Martica Heaner, M.A., M.Ed., for MSN Health & Fitness

Quote:
Q. I saw the “Obesity in America” report on MSN that tracked how overweight the population has become using the body mass index (or BMI). But I think it's misleading to use this as a measure because it is unreliable: My BMI suggests that I am overweight, yet my body fat percentage is in the 8 percent range. Does that make sense?

A. You fall into a subset of people for whom theBMI is not a reliable indicator of fatness.

One of the toughest challenges in scientific studies is being able to measure what is being studied accurately. For example, if a researcher wants to assess a person’s risk of heart disease, there are many potential indicators he could look at—blood pressure, cholesterol, fitness level and, to get more technical, c-reactive protein or homocysteine levels in the blood. However, each of these measures is only associated with a greater risk of disease, they are not proof it will develop. In addition, sometimes the technology to conduct more accurate testing does exists, but is not practical to use in a study.

BMI is a huge joke.

All it measures is height. NOTHING about body build, petite, husky etc.

For me it sez I should be about 157 lbs. I aint been that light since grade school. I would be happy with 170 to 175 even 180.

BMI is worthless. Michael Jordan was considered obese during his playing days with that index. Wish I could be so obese.

It is just more "one size fits all" BS, pun fully intended.

I guess they figure that doctors are too stupid to be able to look at somebody and say, "you need to loose some weight," so they come up with BMI guidelines. This is our government, hard at work!

"not a reliable indicator", but yet this magic number will be what they use when they want mandatory testing for sleep apnea.

One size does not fit all, but yet one index will determine things for everyone.
