I'm a Canadian about to start a long haul career. I'm actually waiting for a call monday to find out if I have a truck or not. After doing an internship on the road for a month staying at different Flying J's and Pilots, i found myself paying 2$ and 5$ here and there to use the wifi. And maybe I got lucky but for what I used it for, it was fast enough. But it all adds up.
Using my Canadian cell in the States for Data costs an arm and a leg and my left nut.
I've been looking at Mifi from Verizon and getting it billed to an american address (truck stop) but at 50$ a month for a gig or two of data, would it be smarter to just pay for 1 year of wifi through Pilot/ Flying J and plan my trips to stay at those places every night?
Now I do own an XBox and would like to bring it with me on trips, I'm aware playing online would be a no no with the Wifi.

and sorry if this topic is beating a dead horse, but I figure the scenario is different.

I think it's appropriate to ask here.

Get a Verizon phone and just tether a lap top to it when you want to go online. This way you solve your phone problem AND you have internet wherever you have phone coverage.

I drive in the US and Canada and got the Verizon MiFi after the major truckstop chains started using Wandering WiFi . It's a real ripoff , especially at the Flying J in London , ON and the T/A in Woodstock . (Now I use free WiFi at the Fifth Wheel ) . Before Flying J was bought by Pilot they had good WiFi . I had a year subscription and used it in the US and Canada .

get a regular verizon plan with a data package, use the stores address to set it up, go on to their website and change it to paperless billing. Pay with your cresid card. Way easier than any rip-off canadian cell or data plan!

guys I appreciate the information. But after moderators edited my post, I think the point was lost. It has nothing to do with Canada. I'm asking what would be more cost effective, paying for Mifi or a 1 year Flying J/ Pilot subscription. This thread should never have been moved here.

Park near a Hotel and piggyback their WiFi, that's how the rest of us do it.
