You can't print without a wireless router. If you use Verizon for Internet and have a mifi hotspot that will work also.

Here is the HP FAQ that explains it, you may have to click on "How do I print wirelessly without a wireless router".
http://www.hp.com/global/us/en/wireless/faq.html
Alot of wireless printers will do peer-to-peer (Ad-Hoc) connections, without a separate router.
I think that is where the confusion is coming in to play here. More and more wireless devices have their own built in servers, and therefore can hand out IP Addresses and alow connections directly without a separate router.Last edited: Jan 20, 2013

The problem is guys that he is wanting to print off of an apple device which will not connec to a printer without an outside router. The only way to print with an app that will connect is if your device is jail broken. I just went thru this two months ago with my computer guy and it just on happen without a router.

Thats where the AirPrint App comes in. Here is the HP FAQ that explains how to setup printing from an iDevice.

However, I will say that Apple products are VERY picky on everything being just perfect for this to work. You must have the correct printer, the correct software on the iDevice, and all the settings perfect. iDevices will not connect to any old Ad-Hoc network. I found this out when I couldnt connect my iPhone to my PS3.
haulhand, you are definitely on to something by pushing the OP to purchase a separate wirelss router. I believe, in the end, it would be easier, due to Apples hard-headed connection protocols. At least then, he is open to using his printer/router combo with ANY hardware in the future.Dieselboss and 07shaker Thank this. -
Thanks everyone for your advice. An apple product wasn't exactly my idea but what can you say if the company provides it for free? I'm just trying to get a few ideas around for my boss. He tried one printer that supposedly did air printing but couldn't get it to work.

Put it this way, I have an ipad and still bought a cheap laptop so I coud print from the truck. Apple has too many hoops.
