Hey everybody,
Just to let you all know, I have been using AVAST antivirus, and up until a couple of days ago, it has done a very good job. However, I went to check something on the SNOPES sight, nightbefore last. Something grabbed my computer, and re-directed it to two other sights. I could not get out of them, and actually had to turn my computer off, to close the internet.
Once I re-booted, I immediately ran the AVAST scan. It came up with three spy.bot malware/adware viruses, that it could detect, but could not delete, or even quaranteen. I did some checking around on line, and found that allegedly, the old "free" spybot sight was sending this out, then charging the user to "fix" their problem. This info came from, http://forums.techguy.org/
Anyway, I got rid of AVAST, and went with Spyware doctor and antivirus. Was able to get rid of this spy.bot mess, and get back on with my life.
Just sending this to let you know, and to also make you aware that not all virus' are sent via e-mail. (Of course you already knew that.)

Good catch Don. It happens so fast, most people don't even realize what has happened to them. Google is another one you have to be aware of. I have found googling a name sometimes, I have gotten links where they redirected me. I love using google but you do have to becareful of the results/links you get back.

Yea, these are the ones you should have for sure on your computer:
Spybot Search & Destroy
Malwarebytes
Windows Defender
Super Antispyware
AVG Antivirus
Most of those are free unless you want to buy for some better features, etc. I have all of these and NEVER get stuff on my computer. -
I just stick with the paid products you can buy at the big box stores. Many times those websites that pop up saying "We've found spyware on your computer. Download our product to scan now." are just as vicious as the programs they claim to delete.

i have been playing around with computer for quite awhile. i was on TechTV message boards and i am on the G4 boards now.
also you have to be careful what you click on on google also. there have been some links that will redirect you to a download for a malicious program that tries to make itself out top be a antivirus program but is really a trojan.
trojans are the worst. they get downloaded and then take over yor PC in a heartbeat. -
I have nearly all the ads on the internet blocked with adblock. That alone helps so much that most of the time I don't even have an a/v program.

Super Anti Spyware is my hero. They got rid of something that hijacked mine about 2 weeks ago.
AVG with Zone Alarm Firewall did not catch it -
"Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool" is good also. It's available free at MS website.
