I know that there is a thread on here about this already but it doesn't really have any information and it died off. I am wondering what is the best dually on the market for pulling a 3/4 wedge or flat. I have it narrowed down to the ram 3500 and the 2015 ford f 450. I am thinking new but will consider used if the price is right. I am thinking ram for a few reasons. One, they have a cummins and since cummins makes on highway motors, it shouldn't be that bad. Two, I can get a manual. Three, they are cheap. for 45 grand I can buy a well equipped Ram. The 2015 Super duty is my next choice because it sounds good on paper. It has not been tested yet so I won't know too much. The perks on the ford include its new motor and popularity. However, on the downfall I don't know if the transmission will be able to handle the power and towing. Two, for 50 grand I can buy a bare bone stock super duty. What's your opinion on these two? Also, is 65 thousand too many miles for a used truck to be used as a car hauler? (I know semis well, but pick-ups not so much) Also, I will be plated for around 33-36k.

I never understood the idea of people running pickups for hauling. You can get a class 8 truck with a nice sleeper for 20k. That would be 700kish on miles, but its expected to last to a million (before major work) if you do your homework. Or you could spend 45 on a smaller truck that will last maybe 300k. The class 8 will allow much heavier loads and give a lot more pulling power. You could even consider a single axle class 8 tractor.

Probably because a pickup gets a lot better fuel mileage, making more money to take home.

And, doesn't insurance go up with a larger vehicle like that? Also, I think it puts you over 26000 lbs which opens you up to a whole can of monkeys - am I correct?

Insurance is really different with everyone, for some cheaper, some more expensive.

Over 26k just depends on how heavy you want to load, many pickups are plated over 26.

As you can see, I've been driving trucks for 23 years. I also said I know trucks and not pickups. We use pickups when trucks are over kill. With a pickup, I can park it infront of my house. I would consider the single axle if I was to run long distance, but I am not. I will be local. The pickup will get better mpg, is cheaper to maintain, and easier to sell. If I can make the same with a dually, why do I need the hassle of a truck. I might upgrade to a stinger if I see that it's worth it. Back to the original question, which is best.

Anyway, back to your original question. I have been told that the Dodge with a manual transmission is the way to go. I would go with the Ford. But I'm sure everyone has their opinion on this. I'm a Chevy guy from birth, but I have always found the Ford's to be a better truck for less money. I have owned both Chevy's & Fords gas, not diesel. I have no experience with a Dodge, unless you count the 73 Dodge window van my dad gave me when I turned 16 :biggrin_2555:

Last dodge I owned was a 07 cab and chassis, good running truck (has 400k now with no major repairs) but I'd never own another, for a little more $$ I'd buy a dmax, way better riding truck IMO

Thanks for the replies so far. From what I see, ram and Ford are king. Most people that had a dmax hated it. I think I may end up with a ram.

I vote Ram. I don't work one but I own an '07 with 5.9L Cummins. There is something to be said for the simplicity of Rams interior and especially the engine well not being chock full of a V8. To me Chevies and Fords(and I'm a Ford guy) are more like luxury cars. I'd look for an old farmer's'07 with 5.9L. A stock one that hasn't been programmed and beat on by some punk kid.

Wanted to add the seats aren't the most comfortable in the world but you're not long hauling in it. Never really seen truck seats that were all that great anyways.
