I just wondered if any guys have had any experience hauling a cargo trailer with a mt45 Freightliner ( Step Van) . I mean it seems a good choice with it's 5.9 cummins 24 valve and Allison trans plus a rear end that's nice and low. It's a dually so should be the ideal choice right?I can't find many reasons not to use the step van apart from it looks ugly and not as cool as a dodge dually but hey $10k to purchase as to about $20k for a ram, seems a great move . I can't use a goose or fifth wheel, that much is obvious but extra space means cash.I was thinking of a enclosed 28ft . Throw some suggestions in .Supernova.

Slice half the box off to expose the frame, put a fifth wheel or goose neck on it. The rest of the box turn it into a sleeper.

Tag along trailer would work. You would have huge sleeper.

    1. It's probably not geared to pull a trailer, 2. You'll be pushing a lot of air with it which means bad fuel mileage, 3. Sometimes cheap isn't always better.

I've owned a few step vans that I turned into Mechanic trucks. The wind will get you.

I don't think many of those step vans had a decent power rating on the motor, may have to spend some money to get it uprated/tuned.

The lower deck will help you if the loading is done by hand or hand truck (assuming you have a ramp). How hard do you want to work? It will also prohibit you from full pallets or other loads shipped/received where a dock is required. (see 2nd sentence) The lighter weight of the van will factor in wind blown storms. A van is a cold ride in the winter. Do you plan on building some sort of partition behind the seat? On a good note, you can think about installing a generator underneath and a RV size heater/AC unit on the roof.

B y the time you get done modifying it and doing everything else, you could of been in a decent truck and be rolling.

With the 5.9 all you need is a bully dog run it in tow mode 400 hp.
