Can someone please explain to me what the break away battery is used for, what the components are, and how it is installed?
Is this more or less what is needed? http://www.ebay.com/itm/Breakaway-T...v-camper-cargo-trailer-tow-haul-/190815768823

They are generally installed on travel trailers. They are charged by the tow vehicle while driving and allow you to operate the trailers lights, water pumps and other stuff after disconnecting from the tow vehicle. What id your operation? What do you need power for after the trailer is disconnected.

The breakaway battery is a 12 volt battery that you mount to the trailer and connect to the trailers 12 volt system. It is used to activate the trailer brakes if the trailer comes separated from the tow vehicle while underway.

not4hire, matski, SHO-TYME and 1 other person Thank this.

Its used to apply the electric brakes on the trailer in the event that the trailer becomes disconnected from whatever vehicle is towing it, bringing it to a (somewhat uncontrolled) stop, but its better than it careening on down the road with no end in sight.
Remember that there should be a separate cable that you need to connect to the tow vehicle separately that is used to pull a pin in a switch in order to activate these brakes. It needs to be attached in an appropriate spot so it will actually function correctly. If the pin can't be pulled in the event of a disconnect the whole purpose of the system is defeated.semi retired semi driver Thanks this. -
I thought it was the vibrator batteries after your girlfriend breaks up with you.
While as wrong as Richter's answer, it's a better one.passingthru69 and semi retired semi driver Thank this. -
In Richter's defense, the breakaway battery does all those things too.

And the switch cable must be hooked tot he tow vehicle ( hitch ) or that's a ticket....assuming he's got a sharp eye.

I am referring to the requirement that the RV transport companies have for your truck to lease on to them.
I remember reading somewhere on here that one person said he put it in the p/u bed.
