sounds like your setup for life as is, in your case id look hard at this commitment and level of stress unless you can just lease on to a co already setup and they hunt your loads, the load hunting is to me the worst part.

Ya, I'm at a point that I don't have to work but would enjoy some extracurricular activity, you never know how long you may live so adding to the pot wouldn't hurt. If I cant do it in away to keep most of the income then I'm out.
If I could maybe find a company to sign onto and run under their DOT,MC, Insurance etc. maybe haul a few loads here and there or only handle one customer for them.

CMF, I am in somewhat the same situation as you. Retired for about 5 years, Personal truck and Gooseneck trailer just sitting around paid off. I leased onto a company and they supply the Liability and Cargo Ins and find me the loads. The pay for a few other little things like FedEx and have Direct Deposit. They charge an acceptable percentage for this. I work a couple days a week and like it that way. Mine is a small company out of Phx AZ and I don't think they take out of state drivers. The finding loads would be the worst and most stressful part to me.

Tanhands, that sounds like a good deal, would like to find the same here in NC. That's why I still haven't taken the plunge yet, why spend the money until I know just what I have to have. I talked to my local State Patrol office where they handle the CDL's about obtaining one, he asked who I worked for, then said come back and see him when I had a job. What kind of answer was that. I am looking around now for a 10.001+ lb. trailer that I can use to take the skills test and get that out of the way. I will go ahead and do the Hazmat when I do the written test. My 40' 14.00+lb 5th wheel RV doesn't require anything but a drivers license.
