Hi Guys and Gals. I put together a little video series on how to get rolling as a hot shot. for most, this info is very basic, but I see many questions out here that I hope I have answered in my predestination.
I cover everything from License, Load Boards, Factoring, and even show some sample loads. As I say in the Videos I can only speak from experience and so I may have over looked something or some of you may disagree with my take on U ship. Really, when I got rolling I wish there was something out here like what I have put together as it lays out what needs to be in place before moving ahead. I hope that those of you that have questions about starting a HotShot find some of the answers and guidance in these videos. There are a total of 5 Videos with a total running time of 50 minutes. in some cases I may drone on, but my intention is to help anyone who wants to get rolling. I hope you like! all the best Steve

Never done hot shot, but here's a question, I've been a O/O, in your video, you said 2-5 million dollar policy? I only needed to carry 1 million dollar policy, why is running hot shot so much more?
-
You don't need any more liability coverage with hot shot than with a class 8 truck unless it is required by the shipper or broker with whom you are doing business or if you are hauling hazmat. The fmcsa requires $750,000 liability. Most shippers and brokers require $1 million liability.

Hello. I am talking form an Ontario Canada perspective. I run with 2 million Liability and 100k for cargo. However, there are some sites that require 5 million here (from what I have been told). insurance in different in each state and Provence. Not really an expert on the limits etc.

what is Hotshot?

I explain in the video listed above. It is a term used to describe smaller tractor trailer set ups. usually a dually pick up with a 40 foot flatbed trailer. these units specialize in moving freight in a timely manner and the loads are what we categorize as LTL - Less than full truckload.

Have just found this site. I used to own a courier, haulage and chauffeur company in England. I now live in Calgary and would like to know if I can get into Hotshotting over the winter months (I own a roofing company but can only work 8/9 months of the year). I have been offered work down in the US driving 5th wheels back to various spots in and across Canada, but I have no idea what I need in the way of licenses and permits to cross Provinces and US border.
I have a 3/4 ton truck but am prepared to get a 3500 dually if I get good feed back.
Any help or advice from anyone would be appreciated.
Many thanks,
Leo
