The scenario...
Pulled into a truck stop yesterday late afternoon. Hit the rack about 9PM, it was nice and warm out. As the night progressed, it REALLY cooled off. About 4AM I reached over and turned on the Espar diesel fired heater. My alarm wakes me at 6AM and everything's wrong.
Dizzy, can barely stand up, eyes watering and nauseated. I had the door windows cracked open and I turned the key to lower them all the way. Went back to the sleeper to lay down and noticed a very slight exhaust odor.
It took a few hours before I felt good enough to leave the truck.
Moral of the story... If you have an auxiliary heater, Webasto, Espar or whatever, CHECK THE EXHAUST HOSE that leaves the unit under the sleeper. Mine's a 1-inch or so flex hose that runs to the back and goes down the frame. It was broken under the sleeper. Even if you don't have one of these heaters and you idle for heat, check your exhaust for leaks.
I'm lucky as I only got the holy hell scared out of me.
Could have been deadly.
I ALMOST didn't wake up this morning

Brickman, SLCTrucker, Voyager1968 and 9 others Thank this. -
Might want to add a carbon monoxide detector to the truck. I know we did, the minute we got the truck back from having the APU installed.
Wargames, Gears, The Challenger and 3 others Thank this. -
So what is the better one to get and where? Gears glad you are still here with us friend. Oh and thanks for sharing with the rest of us.

Carbon Monoxide detectors are available at Home Depot, Lowes, RV Supply stores just to name a few.
Look like a smoke detector. About the same size. Cheap.shriner75 Thanks this. -
Carbon monoxide detectors are cheap insurance against CO poisoning. Please, take the time and the money to install one. My mother almost didn't make it after getting CO poisoning from the RV that 1. pulled up too close, 2. ran his #### generator ALL NIGHT 3. The exhaust for said generator was right outside her window. (She was staying with a friend in their RV at a dog show.) All of the folks in that RV were affected, but my mother lives with some of the long term effects because of the amount of CO she took in.
Gears Thanks this. -
Well I do have Carbon Monoxide detectors in my house (5 of them) but wasnt sure if they made specific ones for Semi/Rvs.

nope they are all the same and they are cheap I'm glad no one was hurt CO is bad news !
Gears and The Challenger Thank this.
