As far as stopping distance goes the main studies used were from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The latest being in 2006.

I read all the responses here, and the senior veteran drivers are very good. All new drivers, Look at how long these guys have been driving, they know what they are talking about. These guys should be charging the newbies for advice like this, FOR FREE. I will ad one thing for the newbies. When you brake, is your heel on the floor or up on the whole pedal ? Try this once and see if I'm right. Put your heel firmly on the floor, and press on the brake pedal. You will have much more control on how much pressure to apply to your brakes. I used to never take my heel off the floor.
